I can not stop laughing at the "next few years".
Seriously, we in deep ****.

One quote i love :
"Even with the spare capacity plans currently in place, this will not keep oil prices from being volatile,'' European Union Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said today, declining to give a range. That will last until 2010said Piebalgs.

Any non peak oiler will think : ok, it will be expensive until 2010, then everything will become as before, oil at 10$ a barrel. Or 5. No reason to get rid of my SUV, McMansion and huge credit.

The Saudis have more oil then anyone and they have publicaly declared oil will remain high until atlernatives replace it. You know things are really bad when the Saudis are saying the oil age is over and the future will be powered by hydrogen. By 2010 the world will be in very desparate shape as far as oil goes.

So the Middle East will need until 2010 to boost output?

How much decline will have non-ME countries such as Mexico, Norway & the UK seen by then?

How much more demand will world growth have created in the next 4 years?

How much of an excess will we need to get prices back to normal?

I suspect that this will add up to a large amount of extra oil being needed in 2010 to bring prices back down.

I hope those expansion plans are REALLY, REALLY good!

The gap between needs and production will increase yearly.

Well isn't that a descending slope?

3 bllion bushel baskets of grass a day to supply our daily needs alternate fuel.
ok lets supply our alternate needs with only 50% required.
Very well,
1.5 billion bushell baskets of grass daily.

ok how about 40% of our needs?

ok 1 billion bushell baskets daily of lawn clippings and wheat or corn or whatever.

hmmmm

the whole US output of corn last year was 9 billion bushels

this will supply us 9 days of fuel and we can eat cheerio's I guess, and park our cars 356 days of the year.

alternates are a "no brainer's" response to the crisis.

Another way of saying what is coming:

turning point, situation, change, puzzle, mess, embarrassment, anti-climax, entanglement, crux, crossroad, impasse, dilemma, pinch, imbroglio, deadlock, pickle, perplexity, climacteric, plight, quandary, juncture, strait, extremity, trial, trouble.

hey! I have a great idea! Let's call this peculiar phenomenon PEAK OIL!

Seriously, the pace at which things are developing leads me to believe we are getting pretty close to the tipping point.

Rising oil and gas prices have been the hot topic all over the media this weekend. No one I've heard comment though has bothered to get at the root issue of why the prices are so high. I agree with the facts of the current tensions with Iran, problems in Nigeria, and switch to the new ethanol additive are reasons for the current spike in prices. However when is someone going to comment on the fact that we don't have 10 mil/b barrels in reserve like we did in the 90s and that only a little more that 1 mil/b can pull up the slack in a crisis. That and the world is unable to produce anymore.

The impression is that once the above causes go away things will get back to normal.
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life.

A agree. These "pain at the pump" articles, many reproduced on the is site, are misleading to the public and shallow/trite to people who are PO aware. They all miss the point. Often, you can read a superficial article like that, turn the page of the newspaper and read either a stunning review of a new SUV, or about how upteen zillion dollars in new highway spending is going to be so great for the economy. INSANE.

BTW, I liked your points about the billions of bushels of biomass needed to replace the oil. All of this silly grandstanding about ethanol makes no sense. When will our leaders wake up? After the 2008 elections? Can we then PLEASE talk about this?

Frustrated.

I'm not even remotely ready for this yet. Here's hoping the crisis backs off again and we get at least a couple more years.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'o')il prices will stay high during "the next few years"

Yeah, that cracks me up too. How much longer will they be saying that? Or, perhaps more to the point: how much longer will people believe it?

Reading this ....I don't think anyone knows squat!!

I've heard economists say 55.00 a barrel (thanks to demand destruction) and I've heard 200.00 a barrel (due to inelasticity). Bottom line is that not one "expert" knows doodley! My "expert" opinion (and I'm just as qualified) is we're screwed!

being practical and knowing what we have witnessed over the last few years, I would say pony up the cash for your gas.

We know that the markets are based upon paranoia and that there are a lot of folks looking to get paid, expect 3-5 dollar a gallon gas for a while.
