is now the time to get into natural gas?

Unread postby fossil_fuel » Mon 10 Apr 2006, 19:05:05

oil price is at ~$69 a barrel, almost as high as it was immediately after hurricane katrina.

due to the extremely mild winter, natural gas is a little over $6.80 per million BTU's, which is less than half of what it was immediately after hurricane katrina.

Will these prices fall into line with each other? is now the time to get into natural gas?

I think any time is a good time to get into energy investments, knowing what we know here, they can only go up over the long term as the crunch comes. But expect extreme volatility, you may want to build a position gradually, buying on the dips. And careful not to bet the farm.

Don't compare oil and natural gas they are two separate animals.

Natural gas can't be influenced by geopolitical issues like Oil can. Plus natural gas uses are alot different than oil.

NG does look good at the moment. If you look at a 10 year chart of NG it always seems to bottom out around the middle of a year and peak towards the end. I’m not really one for believing in patterns/cycles in any market but this does seem to have been fairly regular.

The way things are going it’s hard to believe that buying in at $7 won’t be profitable at some time in the future especially since future NG is trading at up to $10. The down side is we go back to “normal” $2 NG and stay there (Unlikely I think).

I’m not in yet but thinking about it.

Which is the best way of getting in?
I’m not rich enough for futures so I’m considering an Energy Trust. Lou Paquette (Howestreet.com) has been talking about this but he won’t name the Trust (18% yield) – Can anyone help?

One other option is a large NG rich petro stock, two I can think of are Conoco-Philips (COP) ad the other is Encana (ECA). I think these are very solid based on their price to cash flow. Encana is very solid as they have used some put option strategies to put a floor of about $7 per MCF on most of their gas output for this coming year.
