Try getting a case for it. My wife ahs the A920, I have the A900. The A900 is a damned spiffy phone, but its pretty small.
The 920 is a nice phone IMO, well balanced and feels good. She put one of those "leather" cases with the belt clip on it, and while it makes it a bit clumsy to dial it does help the grip feel by quite a large margin.
Also, check into Nextel phones. They have some pretty rugged "outdoorsy" kind of phones as well. The Motorola i530 is the ones some of my friends have. The 560 might work for you as well.
I know there is (Or was anyways) one in the Sprint offering that you could get with an optional rubber coating on it. Supposed to make it more durable, but it definately stuck in your hand well with that rubber grip.
Naturally, all of the phones described are clamshells (Folding, flip, whatever). Sanyo has a few brick type phones. I used to have a 4900, that thing was a goddamned tank. I think you can find a 4920 still, that might be just the ticket. While its still plastic you could get a case for it and have a very rugged phone. THose 4900 series phones were tough and had damned good reception. You wont win any points for style or coolness, but it'll damn sure make a call after you bounce it off the pavement every time.
Most phones these days seem to be of the clamshell variety, which makes finding a non folder somewhat difficult.
