My view is similar to Jato's. Intuition tells me TSHTF in 2009. But objectively, I just don't know for certain, and I don't think anyone really does.
Dieoff, while not certain, I think will happen; but I think it will happen slowly, in stages. It's nice to think that Peak Oil by itself would not be enough to do it; as Ludi and others have pointed out, there are alternatives to hydrocarbon-driven monoculture agribusiness (though I do think making the switch globally might be pretty tough). But after the Peak, with all of its economic and agricultural ramifications, we're looking at four more slaps in the face, at least: climate change, loss of biodiversity, arable topsoil depletion, and aquifer drawdown. Any two we might be able to handle. Three of them, maybe, though it's a stretch.
But all five?
My guess is that in a hundred years, there might be as many as three billion people living on the planet -- and living very differently from how we do today.
Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive...
