Who will profit from peak oil?

Unread postby importscout » Tue 11 Apr 2006, 18:16:05

Every level of our infrastructure is dependent on oil... does this mean that nobody will profit from dwindling oil availability?

Is there a way to profit from peak oil? Alternative energy vendor? Gold distributor? Ethanol farmer?

any ideas...?

To answer that, you need to ask "what will people want to buy because of peak oil?"

That means urban real estate, mass transportation, land, alternative energy sources, etc.

To know who will take losses because of peak oil, you have to ask "what will people want to sell because of peak oil?"

That means suburban real estate, SUVs and trucks, tourist destinations, etc.

Sadly, how about me? A college freshman whose tuition and ALL college expenses are paid for by my uncle, a commodity trader? I think I'll have plenty of education and money to help me out when PO hits thanks to my uncle. I should be pretty set for life as long as I don't fuck it up horribly by spending all day on PO.com...damn.

Who knows? Maybe the best way to profit would be a wood heated 2-man tent. Maybe cast iron cookware (too cook in a campfire with). Maybe sliver or gold or oil or stocks. Maybe biodiesel. Maybe heirloom seeds. Maybe a fresh water supply.

Right now...with people stocking up for bird flu...campbells soup might not be a bad investment...

An even more profound question is: "To what extent is peak oil an artificial creation of those who stand to profit from it?"

To the same extent that the oil they produce is equally as artificial as depletion of the substance.

Vast fortunes... only by those with enough genious or just dumb luck to strike and then get out of markets at exactly the right time.

Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive...

I tend to agree. But in times past some people did manage to preserve their wealth and then snapped up means of production post-crash at bargain basement prices. When the economy recovered any losses they sustained were more than made up for with the newly found capital.

This time may be different as many of those businesses are dependant upon machinery made to run on petroleum products. Also there is the possibility that there there won't be any civilization to return to.

Having said that, I am putting most of my investment money in silver and gold mining stocks (in that order), uranium stocks, alternative energy and rail stocks. I am also going to try to keep at least one quarter of my money in the form of gold and silver American Eagles.

Jellric, I've thought of diversifying like you have however I'm not convinced at this point that Public companies will necessarily be the best choices for gains as things get bad. The constant drive to make the quarter could hamstring them when it comes to longterm advancement.

Privately held companies can be much more flexible and may be the way to go. Not that they are easy things to be invested in.

Stephen Leeb, author of "The Oil Factor" and "The Coming Economic Collapse: How You Can Thrive When Oil Costs $200 a Barrel" has some good insights on how to profit or at least stay afloat.
