I just gave 5 dollars...

to a lady in the park. obviously homeless, but not terribly obvious.... she asked me for three dollars for cigarettes. I get asked quite often for money walking through this park to get to the bank...you know, for something to eat, for something to drink and I always say no. but I was so caught off guard by this lady's honesty in asking for cig money that i gave it to her.

hmm, weird. 5 years ago there were never any homeless begger types in our town, at least none you ever saw, but now there are many. I see them going through garbage cans and sitting in the park at all hours. I find that kind of weird in a WI town of <10K. I supposed i better get used to it....who knows, maybe some day this lady will remember me and help me out, you know, show me the ropes of living on the street or something.

scary thought.

i was born and raised in a small canadian community
15-20 thousand

never saw any of that and last month my mom said she was shocked to see 2 or 3 homeless people in our town now

i now live in toronto for the last 7 years and there are TONS of homeless. i see them everyday and it drags me down i usualy give at least one some cash or a slice of pizza or something but you cant do it everytime or you too will be with them

next month i'll be moving back in our little town

maybe i can start a charity there to prepare for the coming influx of poor or homeless

And you know folk don’t even see it coming. In our local paper yesterday TPTB in our little county gave themselves a pat on the back because GM is putting in a new $130 million press, and for the new Ethanol plant, and for the 2 new monster distribution centers going up. Betting the future of the entire county on industries that are dependent on cheap oil and/or government handouts.

When GM either folds or sheds its pension obligations through bankruptcy the Great Lakes states are going to see a huge increase in the homeless. And since many GM retirees live in small towns, you will see homeless folk in small and large communities alike.

I suspect the soon to be homeless masses will be sent off to the coal mines to dig coal with their bare hands. Get out of debt now or you will be one of them.

Sorry I posted to the wrong thread.

Anyway, if you make a donation to a homeless person, you don't have to tell the whole world about it. $5 anyway, bigdeal. When you donate money, it's best to be silent about it, then your motive for giving was pure, not like how companies donate to a charity and have to tell the whole world about it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.
