What do you guys think the most useful and practical post Peak Oil trade will be?

I think funeral homes, embalmers, casket manufacturing, crematories and so forth should be a big business for countries furthest away from the energy reserves...

Anything hands-on and practical, as many folks with office or retail jobs have lost touch with even basic DIY skills.

Square-foot/organic/frugal gardening, greywater recycling, home improvement (leaky faucets up to energy efficiency upgrades), welding, bicycle repair, small engine repair, basic electronics, etc. (I can see small bicycle- and crank-powered generators becoming attractive). Being able to make useful things from scrap. DIY and recycling skills will become more marketable, at least on a small, neighboorhood/citywide scale.

If it is one of the classic "trades" you are interested in rather than a college education.....

IMO one should stick with the basics. Plumbers and Electricians will still be very sought after. Especially those with knowledge of solar electric and water heating systems. You can't go very wrong with one of these trades. People will still have houses and they will need to have pluming that works and lights that go on.

Think of how many plumbers and electricians it will take to retrofit all the houses in the world for solar applications.

I forgot about nurses and EMTs. People are always going to hurt themselves, and they'll always be willing to pay for help if they need it badly enough.

Most useful skill? Producing food under local conditions, closely followed by production of shelter, clothing and booze.

And yes, there will still be a market for the world's second oldest profession.
