I am truly considering moving OUT of this country because if there is a sudden strong spike in oil or another catastrophe many will be mad and confused and will get real ugly real fast .esp in my area .

The conceptual name for pissed off rednecks trying to steal your last can of beans here at PO.com is 'zombie' .

Whatever you do though, don't move to Germany. You'd welcome the quick painless death from a 7.62 mm bullet in your head fired from a zombie's assault rifle. I mean compared to the slow painful death from being tortured to death by bureaucracy...

After the revolution that is...

If things get bad in the US, they will get bad just about everywhere. Do you really want to move someplace where you will be an outsider when the fun starts? I'll bet US citizens will be very popular about then.

I don't like what I see in much of the USA either, but I'm not convinced the grass will be any greener elsewhere. Obviously certain spots in the USA should be completely avoided (like the urbanized desert southwest), but every place in the world will be facing new challenges are none are very prepared. The post-oil future will be totally unpredictable - what looks good on paper may not work so well in reality. As others have stated, being an 'outsider' is not an advantage in a time of collapse.

The future is always unknown . All decisions are a gamble . I do realize that a bad decision may cost your life . In a time of peak oil , outsiders may be considered as someone who competes for resources .

So , if I go , it will have to be a country that has a large expat community already and to which the country accepts. 99% of the countries do not extend their social services to illegals .Seems the USA has the only government that uses the citizen's dollars to coddle illegals . Most countries,as I said, do not welcome deadbeats as our government does .I know I will need funds of my own to be self sufficient .The problem I envision is that the dollar tanks or if the atm machines do not work .
I am still searching for a place where it is warm and food is plentiful ..and friendly to Americans .(most citizens of other countries realize that it is not the citizens of the USA that wants to wreak havoc upon the world)

The Mennonites established colonies in many countries. Mennonites in CR and Belize. They establish farms and furniture making and are self sufficient.
I do not have a "tribe" here ..so I am searching .People still say "huh?" when I mention peak oil and probable consequences . This year I would like to check out Panama because many Americans stayed after the Canal was transferred to them .
I was just to New Mexico . I was full of questions such as ...How far to town ? Ever think of getting a non guzzler ? Can you grow anything ? Do you use your grey water ? Can you drill for water ? Does your fireplace work ? Seems dry and barren .It is going through a drought now.But the people were not concerned .

Most people do not care and will not care until some catastrophe smacks them in the face .Then they will be the problem because they will not know what is happening.
Knowledge of peak oil changes most people somehow. I used to cruise the makeup aisles and read Vogue. I read Popular Mechanics last week and have taken an interest in hardware and camping stores...lol What a switch .

I live in southern florida. When my supplies run low, I will probably try to live off the sea. I'll eat seaweed, spear fish, and fish for fish. Either that or hunt alligators in the everglades. Florida is a terrible place because of hurricanes, but a good place because of access to fresh water.

The states look fine - everywhere except the south west IMO, but the most hardy could eek out a living in the desert I suppose?
The main problem with the states is the infrastructure, but the vast number of locales make finding a good place post peak almost limitless compared to some countries. NYC I dun know - go west young man

That place was crazy 15 years ago when I saw it, could not imagine it post peak other than a nightmare.
