FUN consumer activism - Chevy Tahoe SUV ad comp, have a go!

Unread postby wildilocks » Wed 29 Mar 2006, 12:23:27

Over on the LJ Peak Oil community a couple of links have been posted to PO activist entries submitted to a "make your own ad" comp being run by Chevy on their website. Here are the ones I am aware of so far, they may be taken down any time though so if the URLs don't work, Chevy have removed the entries; I am adding to this list as I become aware of new vids:

The first ad AFAIK: Global Warming Mobile (copy here)

I would personally find more humor in them if I knew they werent created by a bunch of mindless tree hugging whacko idiots.

What was Chevy thinking to open themselves up like this?

They must have been desperately trying to drum up any consumer sentiment for their golden goose (more like albatross), and forgot about the law of unintended consequences.
It would be nice to see one of their marketing reps break rank and choose one of the PO videos as the winner. They should already see the writing on the wall at GM anyways...

Edit:
Thanks very much Wildilocks!!!
I have no idea why it didn't work, maybe they are filtering the IP-adresses and don't allow non-US ones? What kind of email-adresses are you using? I tried to use two German ones and two newly created hotmail accounts...
Thanks again!

Damn it Doly, yours is really close to mine but I don't have a link. Even the slides are almost identical... granted I ripped off the Mobile commercial a little.
Oil is found in arid lands.
It fuels powerful engines.
And makes your penis seem larger.
Why are oil prices rising?
Some say we have used half the oil.
Others say we have already "Peaked".
What do we do when the oil runs out?
The Chevy solution...
Park your Tahoe...

I admit the last one in the first post made me chuckle. They are well done for the most part.
My problem is a good majority of people honestly believe what is being said in these. That SUV's are the problem. Even a good portion of people on this very board feel that way.
Get rid of SUV's and the problem is solved. How utterly ridiculous is this line of thinking?
Which is what saddens me. people are so goddamned stupid as to think getting rid of SUV's will solve all our consumption/pollution problem. If we arent smart enough as a whole to realize the minimal effect SUV's have on the big picture, we are well and truly fucked.

Spec, seriously, I think there are many of us that realize that SUVs, per se, aren't the problem, but rather the pervasiveness and extent to which our hypermobile culture has put our society on an early deathbed. SUVs are the fattest kids in class and deserve all the criticism they get, but all ICE vehicles (and, to some extent, the EVs that 'may' replace them) achieve those same horrible ends, albeit with much less criticism. And, you're right, the leftist/environmentalists often fail to see the folly of castigating SUV owners while rolling around in their Priuses with the most absurd aura of piety. We are all guilty of accelerating PO, no doubt. It's just that some of us are committing felonies.:P

Errr, dude, I honestly don't think anyone here thinks SUVs are the whole problem. The point of consumer activism is to make a dent in the status quo, and push a particular point in a particular context.
Would it be better or worse for there to be less/no SUVs, in regards to Peak Oil? Of COURSE it would be better. Where the hell does this line of reasoning suddenly leap to them being the ONLY problem? Widen your view a little.... *shakes head*

This is so much fun! I made another one: Video
By the way, the trick to get the URL is when you submit yours, choose to send it to a friend, and say the friend is yourself to find it in your email.
And frankly, I think ALL cars are the problem. But some of them are more of a problem than others.
