The Discovery Channel has a documentary on oil platforms at 1pm ET today. After that, there's a documentary on a super-exacavator that was built to try to meet the surging world demand for iron.

I'm watching it...from a technological POV it's interesting--funny thing; it was mentioned, dramatically, that they are playing beat-the-clock with the compitition. Who this compition is was not disclosed.

"Oil, Sweat and Rigs"

Unread postby duke3522 » Tue 28 Mar 2006, 20:49:00

A new series on the Discovery Channel. Might be interesting. On tonight at 10pm est and 2am est. The link is to the series schedule.
Will report back after I watch tonight's episode.

Tonight:$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')i]Saving Mars While America was transfixed watching the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, out at sea another story was unfolding that had a huge impact on every American. The oil industry began an unprecedented logistics operation to get the oil flowing again.

Oopps!! That was last week.
Tonight: $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')i]The Road to Recovery Watch the Anglo-Suisse Offshore Partners (ASOP) as they survey the damage to their oil rigs and the scale of the devastation after Hurricane Katrina, but the company has six months to get the oil flowing again.

Sorry about that.

The show is mostly fluff about all the super technology that will get at the oil supplies back on quickly. America go back to sleep.

I stopped watching after they said the new rig could survive another Katrina.

I liked it because it shows you how oil platforms work. Not necessary the macho manly men throwing pipe around, but the animations showing how everything works. And all the things that go wrong.

The first scene was the best, IMO. They fly out looking for their oil rigs, and find all six are gone. No sign of them. The guy was in shock. "Devastating," he said. Guess he wasn't expecting Katrina to be that bad.

Don't worry, it will rerun. The Discovery Channel shows everything multiple times. Their shows also run on other channels, like TLC.

Lotsa junk beginning to cover those oilfields. How many rigs did they say were destroyed by Katrina/Rita? I seem to recall hearing 140.

Some serious money is going to be spent installing new rigs.

Hey All,

I thought the show was pretty good. We are getting to see just how tough it is to keep gas tanks in the US full. Maybe this is the new answer to why gas is in the $2.50+ range right now. Got to pay for the hurricane damage.

Anybody in the industry know if most of the oil companies working in the GOM are self insured?

I watched the episode"Saving Mars" and found it showed the hard work and big money it take to get oil and gas up from deep water. Since I have never been on an off shore rig, I enjoyed the tour and have to admire those who do this work. I read about shortages of workers to repair all the damage. This series shows why it takes exceptional skill to do this work.

I have TIVO on DirecTV and checked upcoming listings for this series. There are two episodes scheduled for April 4:

"The Witch Queen and Abyss"- about underwater activities

And

"Mending the Midland"- about the oil platform that broke loose and was floating across the GOM.

The series schedule is at the link below where new episodes and reruns are listed:

A new episode airs tonight:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ') "MARS: Getting the Oil Pumping"

Capt. Woody Woodward needs to overcome technological challenges in order for the oil to flow again on the MARS platform.

No but I can imagine it, they run "future car" shows pretty often.

The US is a great place to be if you are a car.

Future-cars is part of the religion of the masses here.
