Movie: "V for Vendetta"

Unread postby Falconoffury » Sat 18 Mar 2006, 17:10:43

I just got home after seeing the movie, and I really enjoyed it very much. It's not a typical hollywood special effects idiotfest. It has a lot of dialogue, a really well-written script with intelligent characters, and it presents ideas that challenge the status quo. It really has gotten my rebellious blood pumping.

Let me borrow from a quote from the movie as I say the following, "If the government was responsible for killing 3000 of its own people in the worst terrorist attack in history, would you really want to know?"
"If humans don't control their numbers, nature will." -Pimentel
"There is not enough trash to go around for everyone," said Banrel, one of the participants in the cattle massacre.
"Bush, Bush, listen well: Two shoes on your head," the protesters chant

Check out the ratings people are giving the movie at IMDB.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434409/ratings

54% gave it a perfect 10. I have a feeling that most people who post on these boards would fall into that bracket. It even briefly mentions water shortages and avian influenza as a problem. It's a great movie for a doomer and a rebel or any open minded intellectual.

I liked the spin the government put on the destruction of the building at the beginning of the movie. "It was scheduled for demolition." Experts testified to its "lack of structural integrity." This echoed the reasons given in the WTC demolitions.

Also the St. Mary's Virus was similar to the "Anthrax Scare."

Lots of good reviews, but many have a real problem with the hero being a terrorist, and hate it on that basis alone.

From the Rolling Stone review:

"England is a police state ruled by Chancellor Sutler (John Hurt), a fear-mongering, gay-bashing, Islam-hating dictator who strips citizens of their civil rights and religious freedoms in exchange for protection from bioweapons of mass destruction. Some see parallels here to BushWorld. Come on. The chancellor, as acted to the hilt by Hurt, can't be W -- he's hyperarticulate."

The last time America had any real terrorists was around the time of the Boston Tea Party.

You're joking right? Terrorist as used by the current western governments means anyone who disagrees with them. There are lots.

To take something everyone knows, Star Wars. If Star Wars was our world, the Empire would be the governments and the rebellion are the terrorists. Now in Star Wars we were supposed to see that the rebellion (terrorists) were the good side, and the empire was the bad side.

Which side do you "go" for?

The word terrorist is a very over used loaded word right not. It is like the word communist was tossed arround 20 years ago or the word nazi.

You missed the point. In V for Vendetta, the government is the terrorist. Nobody's afraid of V, but everybody's afraid of the government.

Is it my imagination, or have there been more movies out there with a dystopian theme running through them?

Movies tend to reflect the mood of the times, and I definitely feel that there's an enormous undercurrent out there of uneasiness and anxiety about the future. This new V movie is one example, the last Star Wars movie was another and I think the upcoming "Apocalypto" movie by Mel Gibson is yet another. Even on tv, "Battlestar Galactica" seems to touch on this as well.

Quite right.

Terrorists vs. Freedom = Communists vs. Democracy = Savages vs. Christians.

The game is the same. Only the names have changed.

Carrie, it's not your imagination and it's been going on for a while. For a brief history of apocalypse in film over the last 30 years or so see chapter 8 of _From Apocalypse to Way of Life_ by Frederick Buell.

This was an excellent, thought-provoking movie. Interestingly it's based on a comic book series first published around 1985. A quick search on the internet will contain more info about the comic than you ever wanted. The movie release was understandably delayed by several months after the London subway bombings.

I read the original comics in trade paperback form before watching the movie. Good stuff.

Looks like my type of superhero. Although I don't care for the mask. The mask looks like phantom of the opera on crack meets the Joker.
