A friend of mine has this very official sounding paper about how you can build a car that has a tank of water instead of a gas tank. You hook wires up from the alternator to the water tank to hydrolize the water. You vent the oxygen off and use the hydrogen to power your vehicle. Viola. You can drive around all day using no fuel except water and producing no pollution except the vented oxygen and the water vapor in the exhaust. The author claims to have built such a vehicle and driven it for years.
I gave up arguing after a while. This is the same group of people that is obsessed with the "blood type diet" and the whole thing about "AIDS isn't really caused by HIV. It's caused environmental toxins.". I'm as big a critic of science as anyone, but science does get some things right.
What can you do?

Rule No.1. There is no point in attempting to argue with obvious idiots. It doesnt work. Tell them to go ahead and try building it. Meanwhile I'd just practice the expressions of smug superiority and "I told you so".

These aren't idiots. They are friends of mine. They just see the world a bit differently than I do. Trying to bridge those world view differences can be very tricky. We run into that in medicine a lot. Many times you just have to accept that you aren't going to change the other person's view. Often it is much more productive to come up with a solution that is acceptable from both world views.
"I think you have high cholesterol. You think your problem is that you aren't eating the right foods for your blood type. Lets look at what foods we can both agree would be good for you." or "You think the diarrhea is happening because your son has excessive yin and that he needs yang foods to balance his system. I think it is happening because of a virus and he needs extra fluids so he doesn't get dehydrated. How about if we warm the Pedialyte in the microwave?" or "Have fun building your water powered car."

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't ethanol have to be nearly anhydrous to be used as a fuel in an ICE?
Of course, this had numerous errors.
For instance, you won't get the same number of miles from a tank of ethanol as gasoline.
Second, running ethanol in a gasoline engine without it being completely retuned is inviting disaster.

Do you think this forum would be helpful in putting together a "presentation" that covers the basic facts and problems without being overly speculative?
I want something simple that I can look at while I'm talking to cover basic science and possible questions about the facts. Most people are plenty capable of speculation. I need to present the science and I'm no scientist.
An additional "debunk" list about ethanol, etc, would help too.
