Obsession about peak oil.

Postby warnio » Wed 08 Mar 2006, 18:40:13

I know this website is peakoil.com but still I think you are too obsessed with this peak oil thing. I've been browsing it for about an hour now and I think this is too much.

No matter what the original subject of the thread is, after only a few replies it comes down to this generally approved conclusion:

"Anyhow, they're all doomed. Because after peak oil there will be a 50% die off, the country will collapse into at least 100 micronations and we'll all be running around in a tiger skin killing each other with machetes".

Could you at least be a bit realistic.

Somewhere around the internet there's probably another community but with "peak oil" replaced with "asteroid", "pandemic", "ice age", "nuclear warfare", or whatnot.

Ok, I'm exagerrating, and you probably think I'm naive but you guys are at least a little bit biased concerning this particular problem. Well actually, this is peakoil.com after all. Hmm, what am I complaining about...

Uhhh, I should have probably posted this in the "peak oil" subforum. And after checking that forum there seem to be some similar topics on the first page.

Haha, uuuuh, yea sorry...

Hello Warino,

Welcome to Peakoil.com. Let me ask you, what do you think Peak Oil is and how real a threat is it? Might I suggest watching "End of Suburbia" on DVD. I found it at netflix.

To me Peak oil is the point where oil demand meets oil production. Roughly 85 million barrels a day. Our economy is propped up by cheap abundant energy that touches ever aspect of our economy like telecommunications, banking, utlities, and transportation/logistics.

Folks here are very concerned about the future ranging from tommorow to the next 50 years and depending on the issue: everywhere in between.

You will find people on both left and right discussing and debating issuses and possible solutions. To us Peakoil is something more tangible than hybrid lizardmen running the Bush administration from secret bases.

About half the time I am serious, the other half I wiseass full of shit. You'll have to figure it out for yourself, but keep in mind it takes a pile of BS scattered in the garden to grow the ripest red tomatoes.

Well both of course. Crazy ol'Wizard just like Ben Kenobi. I myself always wanted to one day become a proffesional loiterer and hang out in bookstores but never buy anything. From a survivalist perspective a bookstore has shelter, clean water, climate, security, sometimes food, and on a limited scale social interaction. One could live off the land indefinatley provided the eco-system does not over populate. Then we must introduce predators unatural to the enviroment. But alas, I have a wife 2 kids and a mortgage and I turn 36 next month. Youth has been wasted.

Don't let them bring you down warnio. If you keep on reading you'll see that there are people here who actually believe that zombies will run around in the streets, PO + 5 minutes. PO is more than resource depletion to them. PO is an exact moment where the dead will rise from their graves.

The only thing you can do to protect yourself is to buy gold and assault rifles according to them. If you keep on reading you'll see that the gubmint is now trying to take the guns away from the doomers. I guess Bush is involved in this "Night of the Living Dead" conspiracy somehow. (If you read even further, you’ll see that PO is limited to the USA).

This is in a nutshell what will happen according to the doomers.

1. (PO + 0 minutes). PO occurs twelve minutes after two in the afternoon one sunny day.

2. (PO + 1 minute, 34 seconds). All police and military personnel immediately leave their duties. They disappear somehow. It's not clear where they go but before they disappear they somehow manage to confiscate gold and guns from people.

3. (PO + 5 minutes, 8 seconds). The dead will rise from their graves and become the dreaded PO-zombies.

4. (PO + 23 minutes, 13 seconds). We find ourselves back in the Stone Age, hunting squirrel with bows and collecting Dandelions and Cat-tail roots.

BTW, welcome to PO.com!

Sadly, you are right. There is no real discussion here, it's just doom and doomer.

There are other sites with a much more realistic approach.

But please be sure to stick around long enough to make at least 860 posts to PO.com before you leave for other sites, Warnio. That's the only way you'll be able to adequately judge bobcousins' assessment of this site. :P

warnio - Schweinshaxe has a hidden agenda and should not be trusted. He has his life savings tied up in "PO + 23 minutes" futures and is hording Dandelions and Cat-tail roots, not to mention his obsession with squirrel farms. Quite frankly, his fascination with zombies and constant blatherings about assault rifles will grow tiresome quickly. If you decide to hang around you might want to consider adding him to your ignore list!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PrairieMule', 'T')o us Peakoil is something more tangible than hybrid lizardmen running the Bush administration from secret bases.

Oh gawd, not the damn lizard men again! :-D

What you have to understand, warnio, is that this whole issue is a measurable, knowable phenomenon. Unlike your other scenarios (nuclear war, asteroid, pandemic, ice age), there's a 100% chance that peak oil will occur within this century, possibly before the end of this decade.

It's also a 100% certainty that peak oil will usher in a period of "negative population growth". I could go into a long-winded discussion about thermodynamics or pull out an endless ream of charts and graphs outlining fuel consumption by the food industry, but it's all been done to death by people far more eloquent and knowlegable than I.

Now, the method of depopulation is still unresolved, although many here have already made up their minds on how it will come about and won't be swayed from their respective positions. But the main issue is indisputable: Some people will die. It can (and has been, frequently) argued that people are ALREADY dying.

One thing I've learned though, is this: Fortune favours the prepared. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.
The whole of human history is a refutation by experiment of the concept of "moral world order". - Friedrich Nietzsche

I'll have to throw in my confession to bemusement with the "PO + 23 minutes" crazies. There is no denying that when we go Over the Hill it's going to be a steady decline back to lord knows what, but not a sudden collapse of any kind.

The only system that may be subject to a sudden contraction of any kind is the global economy, but that's due to a lot of reasons not directly related to energy. That's due to something more like bad borrowing and spending habits. High energy prices will exacerbate a depressions' woes, though, leading to a faster rate of decline and an increase in undesireable behavior.

The "crazies" in fact are the ones to watch out for. When the trouble begins to set in, these are the ones who will pick up their rifles, hoard every drop of gasoline, fresh water and canned meat they can get their hands on, and shoot anyone who comes close enough to see them. But society will deal with them briskly enough.

Now the originator of this forum did forget the one crucial detail: At Peak Oil + 33 minutes, the Mother Ship will flash into orbit from the Orion system, and begin a massive bombardment of Planet Earth with water balloons.
