Have You Ever Tried to Sell a Diamond?

Just stumbled across this article on the diamond cartel from a pretty old Atlantic Monthly issue. But things haven't changed one bit since it was published, so it's still highly relevant today.

It's a long article which, in a nutshell, states that you, Mister Average Joe, are screwed if you try to sell that diamond you bought with such high hopes.

I have always been fascinated by the diamond industry's ability to persuade people that a diamond somehow means "love". Really, why not a Gucci Handbag or a Range Rover instead?

By the way, when I was young the DeBeers Cartel rule was taht a young man blew two weeks salary on a ring. Slowly that time has crept up. I have heard as much as three months.

Can anyone confirm that for me?

The cruelest irony of the entire diamond industry is that they aren't even rare.

It's also interesting to note that so-called "blood diamonds", the scourge that stirred up all the media noise in the 80's and early 90's, are still being traded widely. Just ask Pat Robertson and his buddy Charles Taylor.

Add that to the list of reasons my wife does not wear a diamond on her finger.

Diamonds are overrated. Now emeralds .... there's a pretty stone. And weight for weight they are more valuable than diamonds.

It always surprises me how offended women get when the issue of blood diamonds comes up... of course it might have something to do with my position...

She: Isn't my diamond pretty?

Me: I don't know, ask the African boy missing his left arm.

Location! Location! Location!

The value of anything has to do with its LOCATION!

A diamond is far more valuable in a girl's belly button than her forehead.

:x I can't convey in words how disgusted I become whenever I see an advertisement that leaves the impression that the women fell for the man because he gave her a big, fat diamond ring. Makes me want to find these people and remove them from the gene pool. [smilie=qleft2.gif] [smilie=5blindfold.gif]

I must admit that I am ignorant as to what a "blood diamond" is. I'm going to go find out.

But the few words you have written, I'm positive that it'll piss me off even more than shallow advertisements. [smilie=angry4.gif]

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Specop_007', 'A')dd that to the list of reasons my wife does not wear a diamond on her finger.

let me guess some other reasons:
1) you are cheap
2) knowing your affection for weaponry, it was a 'shotgun' engagement without the necessary 3 months available to cultivate salary for a lavish ring
3) you are cheap
4) a diamond may be forever, but peak oil is just around the corner. save your money for body armor!
5) you are cheap
6) she actually thinks she is wearing a diamond, but it's really the good ole cubic zirconium...heh heh...sucker!

I hope this a joke.

Otherwise, DeBeers has turned you into one of its brainwashed zombies.
