This question came to mind because in a thread about appliances someone was discussing how to avoid using a vacuum cleaner and he suggested taking your outdoor shoes off when you go inside.
Now I've always taken my outside shoes off when I go inside a persons home but then I live in a country where you would be tracking in snow or mud for half the year if you didn't take off your shoes/boots. My thought is that there might be a fairly close relationship between how far north you live and whether or not you take off your shoes when you come in the door.
