VW Un-Pimps Your Ride

Unread postby TommyJefferson » Sun 26 Feb 2006, 13:33:28

I loved these VW commercials making fun of "Pimp Your Ride" and those bone-head ricers.

"What does this do"?

"It sucks in air".

"It's definately sucking".

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', 'u')h... what are you trying to say about 'ricers'

Ricers are so sad. You just have to feel sorry for them.

Most annoying is when I'm on my motorcyle and they pull up next to me at a red light and sneer menacingly as the rev their engine.

Right. A car could keep up with a motorcycle in street racing.

Far, far more annoying is their loud pipes. I'm a big supporter of personal liberty, but when their racket invades my living room, I get angry.

It's perfectly normal and follows from personal liberty that you should defend yourself against invasions of your property by pollution, which includes noise.

Here in the UK 'ricers' usually come in the form of 'chavs' who drive 'townie cars' :)

Those are pretty funny!

Never did understand dumping money into a car like that. Boneheads. Everyone knows if you want speed, cornering, etc you get your ass on a motorcycle. My stock KLR would probably outperfom Specs ricer... And It'll do it off road on single track also... But if ya really want to compete on road then I could just hop on a Hyabusa or somesuch...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('oilfreeandhappy', 'W')hat's a "Ricer"?

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ricer

You Might Be A Ricer If…
  • You have more exhaust decibels than your engine has horsepower.
  • You see cars like yours in a Shriner's Parade for Children and clowns are driving them.
  • If your rear spoiler is taller then you are.
  • If you can fit your fist into your exhaust tip
  • If you have stickers on your car for parts that you could not point out if asked where those parts are installed.
  • You drive around in a $20,000 import with $10,000 in mods.. and still live with your parents.
  • You are a skinny, backwards hat wearing, dog chain wallet, 2 ft wide pants leg, Limp Bizkit looking white boy fag with a badly applied peroxide hair color treatment and temporary rub-on tattoos!
  • You rev on school busses. Hell, you rev on people in electric wheelchairs.
  • The bill of your hat gets caught when you roll the window up.

I myself have a 96' Accord EX Coupe and I like to mess with their heads. Here is how I do it:

I recorded my daughters music box on a cd and it sounds a lot like ice cream truck music. First, I'll find a group of them congeregating around the parking lot. Then I roll the window down a inch so they cant see me but hear the ice cream truck music with the base on high, and circle them once or twice. I get a big kick out of their reactions because for most of them they were chasing the ice cream truck on their bikes a few years ago.
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

It's the same in the motorcycle community.

The morons blasting around on their loud-pipe butt-jewelry with safety gear consisting of a doo-rag and sunglasses ruin it for guys who use a motorcycle for transportation and travel.

Both the Rugged Individualist V-twin 'Merican-ridin slaves to fashion and the Organ Donor "Stuntas" get us banned from parking lots and parking garages. They increase our insurance rates. They provoke legislators to pass arcane laws against us. They promote the public perception that motorcycles are "toys", undeserving of courtesy on the road.

Fortunately, their lack of skill, education, and experience helps thin the herd.

You have a jetta TDI? Now I am jealous. I still get better mileage on the KLR but I gotta tell you its a whole lot less comfortable in winter!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TommyJefferson', 'F')ortunately, their lack of skill, education, and experience helps thin the herd.

Too true. I see it all the time around here. A 20 year old body builder with a wife beater tank top, thongs, shorts, and of course dewrag and shades zig zagging through traffic on a 1000cc crotch rocket. Idiots who obviously have no understanding of inertia. But like you said the penalties for stupidity on a motorcycle are usually rather high  . Unfortunately the penalties for stupid ricers also get taken out on the mom and kids in the mini van that they slam into at 90mph on a city street.

Heres a tale for you. Witnessed myself. commuting into town on the ole KLR I round a mild bend on a highway where a little gravel sometimes acumulates. We're talking a sweeping bend 200 yards long for 25 degrees with a slight hill. Basically you'd have to be hauling ass to mess this one up. Well this day theres a paramedic there just covering a bikers body. No helmet, short sleeve shirt, leather vest, jeans. His bike is nearby. A chrome encrusted behemoth Harley laying on its side with nary a scratch. From the tracks you can tell he hit a little gravel and laid it over. If he had been wearing a helmet he could have gotten up, dusted off, and fixed the scratches on his chrome later. But that choice for image cost him his life. There was half a bodies worth of blood all from his head as he lay there. His friend stood there by his own bike. He also had no helmet on. Sad.

You could argue that these are just chances you have to be willing to take. Like riding a motorcycle just isn't safe to begn with. I agree but there is such a thing as mitigating risk eh? And no I wouldn't legislate any of it. Don't ask me to pay your medical bills and I won't tell you what to do.

I think these ads are absolutely brilliant:

a. Target (at the first level) the ricers themselves, enthusiasts of the little Japanese performance cars.

b. Target (at the second level) the parents of the ricers, who are driving rather boring honda accords and toyota camrys.

c. Positioning themselves as a "move up" product vs. Japanese from a fun and/or maturity standpoint

d. Preposterous juxtaposition of a middle aged German guy (thus poking fun at the stuffy reputation of the Germans) vs. hiphop culture.

e. Tall blonde--animal magnetism.

f. car destruction--visual metaphor for destroying the japanese car from a performance standpoint.

Note that these ads are running on "whole family/reality" type shows, olympics, etc. and also on kind of nerdlike shows on cable. They are keeping away from Joe Sixpack and Nascar completely.

A whole marketing course could be taught on this ad. The course should be taken by the ad people from Ford and GM.

I agree. I've been car-free since last August. It's a bloody dangerous way to commute. This winter it was often uncomfortable. But I dig being outdoors.

I love the KLR650's. I bought a used 1988 model for $1,200, put 30,000 miles on it, and sold it for $1,200. I will have another soon I think.
