Eating pet food

Postby brobak » Fri 17 Feb 2006, 16:24:33

You know, I heard that as far as caloric density goes, dog food is pretty awesome. I think it was a show on NPR that mentioned that a 100 lb bag of dogfood has as many calories as a half ton of potatoes. And its way more compact. Requires no preparation. Mix with milk or water, and I guess its like cereal. Or grind it up and mix it into things for a caloric boost.

And you could always eat the dog as well...

I have actually tried dry dog food and while unpleasant it could definitely be choked down. Me and some hang glider pilot freinds carried a can of cat food in our flight pack. That was emergency food if you went down somewhere. And lets just say you weren't likely to snack on it while waiting on lanch. One guy actually ended up eating it - he said it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be.

Yup I sure do! And you said it! It is seriously nasty stuff! Spoiled lips and Sphincters and such. Gah! I stopped carrying the cat food in the flight pack after I found out what was in that stuff. Now I just carry something equally unappetizing. SPAM.

Dog food is probably why dogs are dying of cancer at 8 years old.

I once read a article by PJ O'Rourke on the subject of the the food distributed by the UN and Unicef to starving african nations. The content of what is in those giant bags is a mixture of corn, soybeans, and vitamins that forms a mush. It is very similar to Purina Puppy Chow, hence he called it famine chow.
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Well that snickers bar would be gone in about 20 minutes. And after hanging out on launch for 2 hours or so and when you realize that you forgot to bring a lunch and your snacks are gone I think the tuna would be raided also... :-D

Its gotta be something you're really not tempted to eat unless you're REAL hungry!

how bout a can of sardines in Olive Oil?

Besides me 90% of y'all will not touch the stuff.

It's also great with Matzah/flat bread. Season Norwegean Sprats smoked in Olive Oil is the best currently AFAIK.

You can drain the oil and use it to fry what ever un-appitizing foods you snag.

I grew up eating Sardines but my spouse won't let me eat them in the house, says the smell is nauseating.

As for pet food, a magazine I used to subscribe to interviewed a group of Alaska bush pilots and was surprised to learn that Purina cat chow was the favored emergency food. A five pound bag of dry food is full of vitamins and protein and will keep you going for a few days but doesn't effect the handling of a regular bush air craft because it is so light. I love my cat and dogs, but eating their food is not currently in my disaster plan.

I used to put some dog biscuits in my pocket as a kid to stop the dog from straying, I used to eat nearly as many as the dog! [smilie=grommit.gif]

You two make me think of Riggs from Lethal Weapon, he gave up smoking by eating a dog treat whenever he wanted a cigarette

When I was a 1st year at Uni, one of the lads in our Hall of residence had a party and served a wonderful Curry to all of his drunken mates. Following evening in the bar he admitted it was dog food, one lad threw up.
