Hi kid, thanks for joining us.

Don't worry, go get laid. You're at your sexual prime right now. Then, after you get laid a few times, start planning for the future and all this PO stuff.

Crapattack,

That was the funniest thing I've read all day!!! Only something so true could be so funny. It is good to be aware of reality, but don't let it ruin your life.

Hi everyone. I'm a sophmore at Minnesota State University Moorhead(right across the Red River from Fargo) majoring in Biology. I've known about the impact of Peak Oil for a few months and my views are about half-way between the "market will solve everything" and the "it's gonna be the collapse of civilization" camps.

Hey everyone,

So I have tried to stay up to date about peak oil for the last year or so, but the issue didn't really hit home till just recently. That all changed when our last gas bill for the house I live in was $747!?!?! At that point I new there was a problem coming. I have been reading the posts on this site almost everyday since then and I have learned alot. I never understood how complex and fascinating the situation we find our selves in really is.

Other information about me is that I'm 22 years old and I'm active duty Air Force, currently stationed in Minot, ND. It gets real cold up here but we have been having a pretty mild winter, that's another reason I'm surprised about the gas bill. I do have a question. I'm curious to know if anyone has any theories about life after peak oil for people in the military?

Thanks

Answers to that are floating about. If anyone has links to them, put them here; I'll consolidate it all.

Greetings all!

I'm also a young man getting a start on in life...finally. You see, I did the whole college thing, for five years, never got a degree, and kinda sorta stopped going when I hit 2.0. Yea...but I didn't drop out! Quite. Not exactly. You see, despite the physics, math, engineering, computer science, etc...my problem wasn't tough classes, it was lack of motivation. I needed a kick in the butt. Soooo, when I realized my predicament (4 years in of the 5) I called Uncle Sam, signed my name in blood, waited a year to get in, and the first thing the Navy did was send me back to school.

Well, now its been 7 years, and guess what? I've finally got an AA degree. WOOT! Only the last couple that really mattered...different subject material. Buuuut, at least I'm on track again. Enlisted, yea, but with Uncle Sam's boot behind my butt I've got a hellofa motivation! :)

Actually, I make fun, its not as bad as I make out...not now anyway. The military has been good to me, and as soon as I am finished with follow on training, and on the job training, and studying for my next advancement exam, I plan to finish up that old bachelor's degree...I'm only a couple years away (maybe more, since I'll have to work and go to school at the same time). Its OK though, I've still got 4+ years left in my enlistment.

I became PO aware about a year ago, doing research for a presentation. I went through various cycles of, well, you know, and have now settled (I hope) with a viewpoint of cautious optomism. I think that has a bit to do with my views on life, and part to do with my abnormal situation. You see, I shoulda been out of college 3 years ago and already earning 50-60k a year...yea, but I'm not. Instead I'm enlisted, and that offers constraints beyond the small amount of money the military pays...as well as some interesting advantages.

I'd love to give you all details on why I plan to do the strange things I am planning to do, but there is that whole too much info thing. People like to target military personel, donno why, we don't get all THAT much money! Anyhow, let me just tell you what I AM planning to do so you know it is, well, uncommon.

I am planning to get into debt buying, of all things, a condo here on Oahu (granted, over a million people on a little island, no sustainability anyway).
If I re-enlist, I am planning to buy a car (granted, like an Opal Astra Hybrid...should be out 5 years from now *crosses fingers*).
I plan to have a family. Yes, children, and hopefully lots of them (granted, I have to find the right woman first!)

Lastly, I don't plan to, but rather AM getting active (No, I don't mean hanging around street corners with environmentalist signs). I love my state and am committed to saving it. I've started by writing my federal representatives in/of Nevada. Next will be (tele)-networking with people and groups still there...and not just PO groups. And after? Well, we'll see where those actions get me first.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Rich7', 'H')ey everyone,

Rich, even in the military, everyone's situation is different. I can't reccomend anything without knowing yours, but keep in mind you still have options. The military has a lot of benifits you can take advantage of. Use 'em. And if you want to get into the dregs of it, send me a message and we can compare notes...if you don't mind talking with a sqid that is. :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('erl', 'A')aron Dunlap here. Also, coincidentally from Houston, Texas. :P

Wow, what a coinky-dink. I'm Aaron Dunlap from Houston, Texas also.

Since we have so many Aaron Dunlaps on the board, I think we'll have to figure out ways to distinguish each other. You folks can identify me by referring to me as "Big Gay Aaron" from Houston.

=)

Best,

Are you a real economist or do you believe there are limits to growth?

Its all depends on your dafinition of growth...

The world economy have proved itself to be growing with no limits(in the long run) but that not to say there where decades of economic stagnation.

First of all, this is my first time posting on this forum, so I apolgize before hand for any mistakes in my posts. I have been lurking here for over a year now.

What first brought me to this site was my research into the future difficulties my country, the United States, would be encountering in the twenty-first century and during my lifetime. At the time, I was very much leaning towards the political right (due to my upbringing) and believed that the greatest threat to my country was the Peoples Republic of China, with terrorism running a close second.

As I have gained more personal experience by reading this site, and by coming to conclusions on my own from personal experience, I became increasingly convinced that much of my countries troubles were self-inflicted, by its prior actions and its general failure to live up to the original priciples of our founding fathers, written out in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

Presently, I have come to the conclusion that neither political party is capable of delivering us from the catastrophe that we are about to experience, that we ourselves have creating in our greed, selfishness and apathy. I no longer even see myself as an American, as I now despise pretty much everything this country now stands for.

As the enevitable collapse of modern "civilization" draws ever closer, I am amazed at my fellow citizens, and there seemingly infinite capacity for ignorance and stupidity. As they watch "American Idol" and "Law & Order," the fate of humanity and their children is destroyed through their actions, or lack thereof.

I am now grimly certain that the time for this world, as exits today, is becoming depressingly short. I can only prepare as well as I am able, and hope that the new world that shall exist after the destruction of this one, will be a better world, and that my family and friends will live to see it. :(

Should've taken the blue pill. :( With that being said, welcome aboard! :) Lots of fascinating discussions from high finance, to depletion modelling predictions, to conspiracy theories, to not-so conspiracy theories, to put option hedging, to the nature of money, to current political embattlements, to how to grow your own food, etc.,etc. If you have searched for the truth, you came to the right place. There is one thing this site will teach and I quote William Burroughs "the truth is really out there". Enjoy!

Magus, please try not to despair. Absorbing PO is almost like receiving news of a terminal illness-except in this case you have better odds of surviving if you are willing to try concepts of life not born to you. Arrange your life such that you are doing work and activities that makes life worth living.
I frequent second-hand stores and estate sales. I look for items I can sell/trade and collect those I can use for food and home purposes that do not require more than my elbow grease to make them work. (No bread machine purchases here!) I also collect yarn, fabric, books and other things that I anticipate having more time to work with once our economy is affected by the lack of cheaply flowing oil.
Learn a skill that requires you to be more in touch with the earth. You might be surprised by the satisfaction that arises from such creations.
Before PO awareness hit my household, my honey and I planned to travel the US in the anticipated comfort of a converted school bus. (An expensive and ongoing money suck in and of itself if it were to be realized-even in the calculations of cheap oil).
After PO awareness, we thought we would have to give up that dream. Now, we realize we can do it by bicycle. We'll be healthier and wealthier for this way of travel. And we'll see much more by bike than from the high seats of a school bus!
Life is what you make it. Choose sound financial and emotional decisions based on how you believe life will play out.

Thanks Cynthia, I'm not despairing, I've gotten passed that stage now. I simply accept the facts that are evident to me, and try to prepare as well as I am able.

Plenty of books to read around here, I have allways been an avid reader. Already own a bicylcle, too, though I may look into purchasing a new one.

I plan on buying a lot more books on subjects such as herbology, natural living and other time honored skills that aren't getting half the respect they deserve these days. It looks like I will soon need them.

Magus, I enjoyed reading your first post. You've articulated pretty well how most people feel after finding out about peak oil, and all of it's ramifications. It's sobering, yet somehow fascinating. Even watching people's reactions to these historic events is intriguing. It's like they've got front row seats at the gladitorial games in Rome. They're so hypnotized by the spectacle they disregard the warning that they are going to be part of the entertainment themselves, eventually.

Greetings Magus, your fear and loathing should turn into a fascination with survival of the human animal. I found even the smallest thing you do to prepare can make you feel much more optimistic. I figure get planning while the planning is good :)
