Thorn that buggy is brilliant!

Rushdy, I read somewhere that the UK had a "Peak Hay" event in the late 1800's. They had to import hay to feed horses since they could not grow enough for demand! If we went back to horse power we could not, too many people, not enough land...Maybe solar charged golf carts would work! :)

MXT: When a Hummer isn't monster enough

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')url=http://money.cnn.com/2006/02/08/Autos/monster_pickup/]MXT: When a Hummer isn't monster enough[/url]
Towering over other gas guzzlers and too large for most garages, the MXT is the third version of a heavy-duty truck from Navistar unit for consumers.
By Chris Isidore, CNNMoney.com senior writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - If you laugh in the face of high fuel prices...if nothing makes you happier than looking down on those tiny Hummers and F-250 Super Duty pickups...and if you don't have six figures to spend...International Truck has a ride for you.

I sit here in smug satisfaction.
We have our canned foods, our milk cow, our handpumps, our kerosene lamps. Our guns. We don't have one of these, though:

Ashton Kutcher drives one of those.

I guess he really is the poster boy for type-casting.

Now, I have a small truck (Nissan) because I frequently haul things, but it's got a four-banger and I only drive about 5-10 miles on a typical day. I had already seen an article about the MXT a number of months ago. I cannot imagine who needs something like this, but I do defend the right of someone to possess one.

Does anyone else besides me roll down his window and holler at drivers of Hummers, Suburbans, and Escalades, "How ya like them gas prices?" Try it sometime. :-D

In seriousness, products such as the MXT either demonstrate complete ignorance of the problems facing our world or complete disregard for them. I don't know which is worse. Ignorance can be cured, but it's so pervasive and people are so comfortable in it, I cannot fathom how the cure can be applied before the bottom falls out of everything.

I guess that depends a lot on how many people live there, and what's in the back yard.
Somehow, however, I get the feeling there are 4 people at most in there, and there IS no back yard. Oh, and it's probably mortgaged to the hilt as well.

Yeah maybe whoever bought it must of gotten an adjustable rate mortgage, 0% down payment, with negative amortization!

I wouldn't be able to afford the property taxes or home owners association dues let alone the mortgage on that behemoth.

Don't forget: the owner quit his job, because he can comfortably live off of refinancing the equity out of his house every couple of years. And his neighbors do the same. A nation of people selling houses to each other.
this thread has been *officially* hijacked! :)

Wow! A baby truck!
Since Navistar makes 18-wheelers, these are for the people that *want* to be truckers but...sigh...must work that job collecting over 150K a year. Life's rough I guess. Wonder how many I'll see at my garden centers this Spring? [smilie=5flowerface.gif]

I was always under the impression that these where meant to compete with trucks like the grizzly. The grizzly is also a beast of a truck but it was intended to spend It's entire life offroad hauling massive amounts of crap around from job site to jobsite. I've seen 2 grizzly's on paved roads over the years. One at a home depot and the other stocking up on groceries for camp. Both obviously lived hard working lives and I assumed they where in town for the day to load up.

The idea of using one of these things for the daily commute is insane though

Plus, the article said they only sell a few hundred or thousand of these things. In a nation of 300 million, they are completely statistically insignificant. Those who drive them may well be wealthy enough to completely disregard the gas prices us plebes complain about.

Either that, or they will be bought by ppl for a purpose. Much like the full ton fifth wheel diesel duallies out in horse or ranch country.

I used to flick off Hummer drivers because of global warming.

Now, I see it's just the peak. The peak of everything this consumer society.

Eight tons = a 4 cubic yard concrete mixer loaded with 3-1/2 cubic yards of concrete. So if you got tired of commuting to an office cubicle job you could go into the readymix business and at least get some exercise!:-)

Though, the crew-cab does make it look rather like a CalTrans maintenance vehicle. Put a dump body on the back for that, and a tool box full of shovels, brooms, rakes, etc.

The sad thing is, big pickup trucks do have a real place in the world, and these obnoxious SUVs just make things harder for people who really need a big truck. One of my colleagues drives a great big Dodge diesel 4x4, the biggest they make. He routinely has PBX installations & repair calls up in the mountains, out on dirt roads (the other day he was on a job that was at the end of 9 miles of rutted dirt road), through blizzards, and so on. For him that truck is a tool for work, not a toy for amusement.
