What exactly are petrochemcials?

Is it true that to produce plastics, pesticides, etc. the molecules of petroleum are actually modified?'

Also, are companies like Dow, Monsanto, BASF, etc considered "petrochemical" companies?

Basically, anything that isn't metal, glass, ceramic, paper, some types of cloth or wood is a petrochemical.

Search Wikipedia for petrochemicals, there's a whole lot of stuff there. But before panicking, remember that:

1) If we stop using oil for burning, there will be plenty left for other uses like plastic.

2) If needed, we could get those same chemicals from plants.
