tropical diseases

One thing to note about tropical locations is that people from sub-artic and temperate regions lack immunities to tropical diseases. Prior to modern vaccinations and antibiotics, the vast majority of northern people simply couldn't survive in the tropics for more than a couple of years before expiring.

Even to this day one cannot live in sub-saharian Africa without 'not' catching some sort of disease. I have been in West Africa for numerous short trips and on one occasion caught Malaria after a few days already.
It is expected that Malaria will appear in southern Europe with the rising temperatures.

Wandering Archer -

if northern peoples were unable to survive the tropics without modern medecines then the UK would not have run India, let alone the scores of other tropical countries that formed the British Empire.

This is not to understate the seriousness of tropical diseases - nor the peril of their northward/upward shift which climate change is bringing to unprepared populations.

West Nile virus is one such - another is Malaria, that has started recuring in Europe having been eradicated, and is also occuring at far higher altitudes in the tropics, as climate change allows the mosquito carriers to colonize new areas.

Having endured Dengue fever (in Venezuela) it's an issue over which I share your concern.

regards,
