LA Auto Show Concept Winner

Unread postby some_guy282 » Sat 04 Feb 2006, 11:56:42

Forgive me if this has been posted somewhere else on the boards already. I did a couple of searches and didn't find anything else.

Someone linked to the LA auto show on another forum I'm a member of, Bike Forums. You can find the post I saw it on here. There was a design concept for future cars, and the winner was the GMC PAD. Check it out....

You can get bigger pictures and more details about it here.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his thing is a window into car psychology. The car companies realized a long time ago that effective transportation is not why people buy cars. Among other things, people buy the idea that the car is a protected personal exoskeleton that insulates you from the rough and tumble of the outside world. The PADmobile simply takes that idea to an extreme.

That's a quote from a poster in the BF board.

I'm thinking of what Kunstler said about the US. Supernatural level of cluelessness....indeed.

Looks to me like the designers are completely out of touch with the current state of the world and the issues that matter for their companies survival.

Or in other words, VERY DUMB concept vehicle and their designers. 8) 8) 8)

Sadly, I'm not very surprised that someone would design a car like this. However, I am surprised that another group of people would choose such a concept as the winner.

Dukey, ha!, I thought the same thing: "Looks like a streamlined dustcart." Exactly.

I couldn't even figure out which end was the front or back. !

Although I do like the the thinking behind having an energy efficient mobile home. If the way to survive means finding work close to home then why not take home close to work. !!?

Kind of reminds me of my prom night... :P

That thing is SWEET!! It's the most "futuristic" thing that I've seen in ages. Heck, it almost looks like a Transformer. If that thing ever gets manufactured, it will service two markets: the hollywood contingent and wedding parties.

Anyhow, toss a couple of missle batteries on that puppy and you're ready for some PO pillaging while remaining super-pimp.

"The media rich environment is unlike any other, and comes with an endless variety of entertainment, information and security options..."

"Media rich."

"Endless variety of entertainment."

Holy cow!, will this culture ever GROW UP?!

"It’s a home ownership concept that enables cultural and geographic freedom for the modern city dweller..."

Freedom from annoying ties to land and geographic location, just the thing to create a new class of landless migrants endlessly migrating in search of work. And owning a "mobile loft" doesn't mean squat when you have to pay rent for the square footage it's parked on.

Notice that all the interior views in those photos look distorted, like a movie version of what someone sees when they're drunk or stoned. That says a lot, doesn't it?

Am I the only one here that remembers "ARK II"... a 1970's saturday morning TV show in which a crew drove around a post-apocalyptic american wasteland in a white vehicle suspiciously similar to that concept car. Throw in a monkey and a rocket-pack and it could be used in the show. Strange.

Thank you! I have been racking my brain for months trying to remember the name of the show. Remember how they all had names from the Bible?

OMG! I may be dating myself here but I have actually seen that show. I was a little kid but I do remember it. Thanks for the retro flashback.
