It does seem like biofuels are winning the dabte recently, doesn't it? Not a day goes by without hearing of several studies or projects underway to produce biofuels. Maybe the peak won't be so severe afterall. I still haven't seen any good studies about how much cropland would have to be converted to producing biofuels and whether the earth can support it.

Spotting An Oil Addict: A Crude Guide

Unread postby Petrodollar » Fri 03 Feb 2006, 10:25:10

Here's a little article from this week's Washington Post, my light-hearted contribution for this Friday...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Spotting An Oil Addict: A Crude Guide

In light of President Bush's declaration in the State of the Union address that "America is addicted to oil," here's a list of warning signs that a loved one may have a problem:

Keeps saying, "I can stop my SUV anytime I want."

Characterizes habit as simply "social driving."

Buys drugstore needles for "fuel injections."

Wants to send daughter to Quaker State.

Hidden inside teenage son's copy of Penthouse: a well-thumbed issue of Petroleum Digest.

When they talked about a higher power at the 12-step meeting, thought they meant premium unleaded.

Wakes up in a pool of own light sweet crude.

Cans of 5W-40 hidden in underwear drawer.

Can't kick the minvan habit even after the kids have left for college

There's a "Mr. OPEC" on the phone, saying he just scored some "really potent" black gold.

Feel free to add your own criteria of "spotting an oil addict."...

Hides minutes of meetings with "friends" in the energy industry.
Grants tax breaks to most profitable corporations ever to build refineries.
Starts war with country that "happens" to have a lot of oil lying around.

...here's one way to spot an oil addict:

He or she drives a car, perhaps a hybrid, with a bumpersicker that says "War is Not the Answer."

- Insists they "need" it to get to "work".
- Waits in line in gas stations for another fix.
- Complains about the price, but pays it anyway.

An American exec visiting our offices told me of a similar story.. Except he said the wife of a friend of his drove 10+ miles to buy milk that was discounted at 10% below their local supermarket 2 miles away. It cost her twice as much in fuel (not tomention time) to drive ther and back than what she saved on the discounted milk. When he pointed this out she was dissmissive about the cost of fuel but blamed him for buyinh the gas guzzling SUV (even though she was the one that insisted on it in the first place) .... I think she was a blonde. 8O

Why is driving 9 miles in an SUV for milk something worth remarking about? That's standard practice here in new suburbia. I see people driving to the local strip mall, leave their Expedition running and go into the store to buy a pack of cigarettes. Nobody seems all that concerned about the price of gas, or anything else.

What I observe in my daily activities reinforces my extreme doomer outlook on peak oil every day. We are addicted to a cheap source of energy doing crap for us. A large amount of shit is heading for a very big fan. The withdrawal symptoms are going to be really bad.

I'm scared, I live in the US's most populated state, and everybody drives. [smilie=5eek.gif]

I was just at a fiesta of gas wastage. The winter carnival on a local lake. All manner of gas burning toys were zooming around spraying slush on the lake. It was truly horrifying to anyone who is aware of the peak oil problem. It's hard for the average man to disentangle his personality from what he drives. On a snowmobile you are some kind of superman. Motorcycles and cars are the same. I began to think that it is going to get ugly when they try to tell these people that they can't waste gas like they are used to doing.

Telling us that we're addicted to oil is like the pusher man telling his addicts that he's running out of junk, so they'll have to straighten up. We might have to do it, but the withdrawal isn't going to be pretty.

Hello from Pheba, from the farm:
We live 7 miles from a gallon of milk, but usually buy it at the nearest town which is 15 miles. MIlk is the only product I buy where I am forced to buy just 1 or 2 at a time.
My husband used to think I was nuts, but he finally figured it out. I buy a bajillion of most food items if I can figure out how to store correctly. He used to think that was crazy, but it makes sense.
Why buy 1 can of beans, when you are spending fuel to go to grocery store to get it.
I buy 24 cans of beans, and recently I purchased 75 pounds of dried beans at a local organic co-op. I keep them cool and dry, and put a lot in my deep freeze. I also buy spices, flour, and frozen veggies in bulk. We have two full deep freezes, and a lot of dry storage containers. I rotate food and keep it stocked up. I do this to save on fuel.
Driving 15 miles for just a gallon of milk is crazy, but I am just not ready to start milking a cow yet. I also buy soap, shampoo, detergent, etc. in bulk.
Our grocery store recently sold out on a very expensive brand of spices. I bought 60.00 worth at 1.50 a bottle, and have about 10 years worth of cinnamon, lol.
I bought one of those food packagers that do the heat sealed bags. Does a great job of food storage.
Last week hubby and I attended a political meeting.
We went to a Democratic chili supper.
I would say that at least 65 percent of the Democrats arrived in a SUV, and later they all tossed their plastic cups and plates and silverware in the trash without a second thought. Not a single person asked if the items were being recycled. That was over 450 plates, cups and knives and forks. Then the main speaker, a retired senator from MIssouri stated that Exxon made 47 billion dollars this year because of the Republicans. What a bunch of oil addicted morons.
Actually, the most important clue to an addiction is the first step.
Admit you have a problem!!

wow, is 7 or 10 miles a common distance to a store in suburbia?
How about work then? (and how can no one find it a good idea to open a store in a less distance? 8O )

Probably they figure that if they do WalMart will come in an put them out of business. Our problem is structural.

Work? My brother in law used to drive 45 miles each way to work. I know people now who drive 120 miles a day (60 each way) for work.

The problem with building a store closer is that there's not enough people around to make them profitable, and there's the Walmart/almost any big chain problem too, like shortonoil pointed out.
