$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('smallpoxgirl', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jupiter422', 'S')eeems like a real odd reason to arrest someone.Just on the speculation that she might do something.

Have you ever been to DC?

Couple of years ago some people were peacefully protesting in a park. The cops surrounded the park on all sides with riot squads and then ordered everyone to disperse. They, of course, couldn't disperse being surrounded on all sides by riot police. They then arrested everyone in the park for failure to disperse. A group of nurses that had been walking through on the way to a medical conference got to spend the day hogtied ankle to wrist in a holding cell. They picked up protesters, bike couriers passing through, everybody. Rule #1, the constitution does not apply within the borders of DC.

Thanks for the inform on rule #1

Trying to unfurl a silly banner just shows what a noob Sheehan is at dissent. She would have been much better off minding her manners and letting the cameras focus on her repeatedly, which you all know they would have.

That would have made Bush uncomfortable... much more so than getting cuffed & stuffed before the party begins.

Cindy Sheenan arrest at SOU address

Unread postby tsakach » Wed 01 Feb 2006, 00:20:21

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('bradblog', '1')0:02p ET - CNN files its story. Sticks to "banner" reporting:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Peace activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Tuesday in the House chamber after she unfurled an anti-war banner before President Bush's State of the Union address.

Capitol police arrested Sheehan and questioned her for about an hour in a separate area of the House, a senior House official said.

Sheehan, who became a vocal war opponent after her son was killed in Iraq, was an invited guest of Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-California, who has called for a withdrawal of troops in Iraq and supports legislation for the creation of a Department of Peace.

10:20p ET - AP updates their report. Confirms original exclusive BRAD BLOG report that it was a T-Shirt, not a banner that led to Sheehan's arrest:

[Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly] Schneider said Sheehan had worn a T-shirt with an anti-war slogan to the speech and covered it up until she took her seat. Police warned her that such displays were not allowed, but she did not respond, the spokeswoman said.

Police handcuffed Sheehan and removed her from the gallery before Bush arrived.
bradblog.com

What if, though, as bradblog.com is reporting, there was no banner being unfurled and she was only sitting there in her "# of dead soldiers" t-shirt?

You think all these news outlets will issue any retractions?

Parents and family of dead soldiers are welcome everywhere in America as long as they support the war effort. If they don't support the war they better carry bail money whereever they go.

Why should they issue a "retraction"? That's pretty severe don't you think? That sort of thing is usually done when legal action is threatened against the media outlet by an attorney for someone whose character or business was harmed by a published/broadcasted report. No such harm was done here.

An update saying simply the object of contention "was a t-shirt, not a banner as originally reported" is what the media will do. The next update from the wire services would then likely not even mention the banner.

That's not the crux of this issue. Move on.

Following another Bush speech on "The Truth according to Me", the real state of the union continues outside in front of the Washington DC police department, where police are kicking people in the head. Bush is weak and cannot tolerate a mother who sacrificed her son to the Iraq war, to wear a t-shirt expressing her views.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Bob Fertik', 'U')pdate 12:08 am: David reports Cindy has just been released. She was filmed by 3 networks and answered a few quick questions and mentioned she was "roughed up" - David said she looked tired and frustrated. She went off to sleep and will appear on the Today show in the morning.

Update 11:44 pm: David Swanson reports by phone on the scene: During the protest in front of the Capitol Police HQ, 2-3 dozen police locked arms and pushed the crowd across the street. A protester named James from World Can't Wait was arrested for chanting "Free Cindy Now" with a megaphone. As the police grabbed the megaphone, they hit a woman protester in the head, but she is ok. They also kicked Aliska from World Can't Wait in the head, and she required treatment in an ambulance before she was released. Cindy is now being taken to the Central Processing Center in Judiciary Square, and the crowd is following her.

Update 11:04 pm: There are 200 protesters standing outside the Capitol Police HQ between 1st and 2nd on D St NE (between Hart SOB and Union Station). They are chanting and demanding Cindy's release. Tell the DC media to cover the protest!

Supposedly on bradblog.com, it was a T-Shirt with the number of war deaths on it... the banner thing may have been fed to the media. (Definitely fed to the media if it is true..)

These two threads need to be merged.

We need a "Domestic Terrorist Act"...

With provisions such as:

Having the right to assemble and present banners at political speeches.

Wearing T-Shirts.

Making illegal the use of cordoned off 'official' protest zones. This is on par with 'separate but equal' schooling of the past... Citizens will now be able to express their freedom of assembly and speech in the United States of America.

Citizens partaking in protest activites may not be unlawfully kept.

Amazing to read this.

Definetly Freedom of Speech has been redefined by Bush and Comp. closer to that practiced by Mao and Lenin. :? :?

You ain't seen nothing yet. If OBL gets in another successful hit on the "homeland", the Constitution will be history and the concentration camps will open for business.

And the blogosphere may end up on the endangered species list....

Whats the problem? She could have stood outside and protested all day long.
You do NOT protest the fucking State of the Union speech while in the crowd!!

And just so you know, there was on other lady removed for wearing a T-shirt.
A lady who supports our troops, who supports our freedoms. A congressmans wife. Far from Anit-Bush or Antu-war. She spends alotoftime helping wounded Marines in hospitals.

Anyone know who she is? Or are you all just worked up over Cindy She-hag?

C'mon Specop, standard Bush policy is to allow protests in a protected 'Freedom of Speech' zone somewhere near Hoboken, NJ. ;-)

Seriously, though, I have no issue with Sheehan being arrested. She's apparently a publicity hound, and if she's going to do stupid stuff like this, then she's going to get in trouble.

The other lady in question wasnt arrested. She was asked to leave, got up and left.
Cindy was asked to leave and refused. Standard procedure is to arrest someone in that case.

Funny, dont hear much mention of the other lady do we?

Our media can suck a dick. They piss me off. CNN should have so many fines they should be bankrupt by now.

It would seem to me that the point should be that NO ONE ought to be arrested or asked to leave for wearing a T-shirt.

It is amazing to read this, I agree. Shocking how easily people lap up the bowel of shit the media serves as "news".

Enjoy your shit boys. Might want to suck some more Kool Aid to help it go down.

If your wondering why I said that, check the other post on PO about this issue here and see if you can answer the question I asked.......
