Peak Oil: Wikipedia

Have you ever thought about setting up a wiki? I think that it could be very useful for building a collection of information and links that all us peakers need. Could be used for:
  • Information about oil depleiton
  • Information about alternative engery sources
  • Survival information
  • Local peak oil groups

Yeah...I am aware of the the first two links but what I was thinking was more of a complete resource. I find myself now collecting information from various sources and storing them thinking I might need them in the times ahead. Especially survival information. The articles on the sites you mention are good as an introduction. Somewhere to point people who haven't heard of the peak oil theory.

What I am after is a deeper source of information with hints and techniques on many thing to help people ride the peak and survive. As well as thorough discussions of different renewable energy sources and energy storatge tecnhiques.

We could do a Wiki or a phpNuke Enclopedia Module that has tighter integration with the rest of the site.

If you want to take the lead in trying to populate it, I'll host the scripts here.

I am willing to take the lead in trying to populate it. I have some ideas on the general strucutre. I am not sure how phpNuke integrates with Wiki though. I have used TikiWiki on other projects and that integrates well.

By the way, I am a PHP/Database developer and run my own hosting company. Anything I can do to help you. Please give me a shout.

wiki doesn't talk to phpnuke, far as I know. Here is what I do have
http://www.peakoil.com/gate.html?name=Encyclopedia

we could use this Encyclopedia or install a true Wiki.

I can't see that. It says admin only. Is it just basically for putting definitions of terms? Perhaps it would be better to use a true wiki. The nice things about wikis is that they just grow as more people add content and ideas. I wasn't thinking about just a list of useful PO terms but rather a complete resource for understanding the theory behind PO, knowing about alternative energy and real self-help information for the common man.

Sent you a private message Sulayman...
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Yeah BabyPeanut, I have seen that. However, it is not exactly what I had in mind. That is just one page with an overview of Peak Oil with links to other sites. I want to build a whole set of pages, like an online book, covering many different subjects within the Peak Oil framework.

Peak Oil and Wikipedia

Postby lotrfan55345 » Sat 30 Oct 2004, 19:15:12

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil You can erase and edit that whole page by clicking the "edit this page" button. You can make their ... err ... 'uninformed' article -or- make a totally new one. Their article seems overly optimistic, specially their "renewables" section.

Just keep a few things in mind:

--Don't put in anything that could be considered "mere speculation;" if what you're saying is contraversial, include a popular and well accepted source.

--Don't put in any value judgements, because it will be considered POV. All you need to do is simply put in useful information, and let the readers decide what is good or bad--words like "good," "mainstream," or "lied," which are all considered POV value judgements, should be avoided like the plague.

--If you feel you must express someone's opinion (as opposed to a fact), and there are other different opinions also, you must also express those opinions with about equal effort to stay NPOV (no matter how rediculous or unworldly they are).

It will, of course, be difficult, but you have to do these things to stay NPOV or there will be chaos and deletions like no tomarrow.

Oh, and you absolutely must not delete or change the whole thing without an explanation. Instead, I suggest you simply rebut and add to what is already there.

What's already there seems pretty good to me. It presents a balanced view and well reasoned arguments for Peak Oil. It's not alarming in tone but encyclopedia articles shouldn't be. I could see adding an explanation of why alternative energies are not seen as adequate replacements for oil.

Perhaps a new article on "Olduvai Theory" might be an appropriate link to this one if you're worried that the possible implications of Peak Oil aren't fully explored.
