Who says the American people are out of touch?

Unread postby NevadaGhosts » Mon 16 Jan 2006, 00:50:30

Peak oil? Climate change? Overpopulation? Out of control deficit spending? Americans losing their personal freedoms? Yeah right...

Some top AP news stories posted on Yahoo news for 1-15-2006:

Eminem and Ex-Wife Kim Mathers Remarry

Man Solves Rubik's Cube in 11.13 Seconds

Capsule Brings First Comet Dust to Earth

Remember, these are top stories! There were also some more relevant news stories posted in the same section, but they weren`t so... entertaining. I suppose the more important domestic and world issues are too boring for the average American. I mean really now, how can peak oil compete with the Rubik`s Cube world record?

How can you have a fair Rubik's Cube contest? Some scramblings are harder than others from the standpoint of how many group-manipulations are required. The Rubik's Cube was invented to illustrate group theory. I remember falling asleep thinking about the solution/manipulations that I had read in a 'how to do a rubik's cube' book. I remenber, too, waking up with the confounded cube still in my head. I did learn the set of manipulations required for solving the cube, but have since forgotten it.

I guess it is not only Americans.

I am stunned how many people don't even follow the news, or rather what is left of good old fashioned news reporting. They don't even know the basics of what is happening in the world.

Of course they do have an opinion on everything.

It's not just a one-shot:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')till, the world record alone didn't gain Lo the overall champion's title at the event, which was determined by averaging three of five solution times in the final round.

What I found odd was that all the contestants seem to be males of Asian descent.

I used to be able to solve Rubik's cube, but I don't know if I still remember how.

That one they came out with that was 4x4 instead of 3x3 was light-years more difficult. I never did figure out that one.

OMG Eminem is officially remarrying? Wow, I thought those were just unfounded rumors...
I wonder what music to expect now from his upcoming albums.

Amazing isn’t it, I no longer look for people to wake up. They are to comfortable in their lives and why change? Things have always been this way and they will always go on this way. Most people only care what is in fashion, which sports team is going to win the super bowl. After that its time to sit down and melt your mind with a couple of hours of reality TV shows. Start talking about the price of gas going up instead of looking at why they run down to the gas station and fill up their cars and a couple of gas cans. That gives them what about a weeks reprieve before they have to fill up again. Yet people will what hours at a station trying to save 20$ if they price were to jump a full dollar (small cars with 20 gallon tanks.) Nope nothing will change until it is to late, not because we can’t change it but do to the general apathy of the human race. I hate to see what this world will become in the next few years, nothing will be left as we try to keep business as usual running so that we can sit and get caught up on the celebrity news. I'm not sure why we Americans are so ignorant, and so happy to be so. I mean, the difference between CNN and CNN International is like night and day.

Someone who recently visited Japan commented on this blog that the Japanese really surprised her by how aware they were about energy and environmental issues. Nothing like Americans. I've noticed the same thing with Europeans and Canadians. They tend to be to so much better-informed than we are. I remember talking in a pub once to a British actor (nobody famous). He had this thick Cockney accent and was half-soused, but he spoke very intelligently about American politics and was better-informed about American current events than the vast majority of Americans.

The problem is not the people, it's the media institutions. I would think this is pretty shocking news but you'll never see it on CNN.

Students turn backs to Gonzales speech

"When you're a law student, they tell you if say that if you can't argue the law, argue the facts. They also tell you if you can't argue the facts, argue the law. If you can't argue either, apparently, the solution is to go on a public relations offensive and make it a political issue... to say over and over again "it's lawful", and to think that the American people will somehow come to believe this if we say it often enough.

In light of this, I'm proud of the very civil civil disobedience that was shown here today."
- David Cole, Georgetown University Law Professor

Actually, Daculling, it was on cnn.com a few days ago. Not sure about the networks, I have no T.V. and I don't have the time to watch the amazing amount of useless crap on the news networks.

Wow, these stories are more interesting then most of the drivel I get off the BBC news in the morning :)
From the news you'd think there wasn't record UK debt, plumeting north sea oil and gas production, record high oil prices, looming water scarcity and a dim future for the planets number one energy supply.

Out of interest, I did catch one item of interest this evening though, it was a study by some oddball research group for scenarios for the future including technology like cars that drive themselves (yeah - we'll really need them). But I did catch a brief mention of one scenario of a crash in civilisation by 2020 from memory to do with oil. Maybe some people are starting to wakeup, still too little though judging by the irrelevant garbage that does for most news.

Why do you bother turning to the BBC in the first place?

I like the sound of the English accent. I listen to PBS here in San Diego and sometimes I'll tune it in and there they are so I listen. I'm not insecure about intelligence.
