Dirty Water, Dying Fish

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Led Zeppelin', ' ')And yesterday I saw you standing by the river,
And weren't those tears that filled your eyes,
And all the fish that lay in dirty water dying,
Had they got you hypnotized?

Heard a story on the radio (NPR's All Things Considered ) about how so many fish are dying in the Chesapeake Bay and elsewhere. Seems the estrogenic pollutants are messing up fish health. About twenty years ago, they used to have specials about how the amphibians are dying all over the world. Maybe James Lovelock is right and Gaia is sick. When I look up at the sky though, it's still blue, the trees are still green, and birds are everywhere.

PM-

I found a good website, gives the nuts and bolts of the problem

http://www.chesapeakebay.net
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

In Europe, cod is sold on the black market.

You see there are restrictions in place here. You can't fish as much cod as you like anymore because it's almost extinct in the waters around Europe.

So there's a black market for cod here. Rouge fishermen are now fishing cod in stealthy operations and distributing their catch to the local upper class fish markets. If you know the secret handshake you get to buy half a kilo of cod to a rediculous price.

Black market cod. 8O

There was an interesting variation of this in s.west Victoria this week.

It was noticed that the eels in Lake Bolac (not huge, shallow, semisaline, within a >90% farmed landscape) were dying in huge numbers, not unsurprising in an Aus summer
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/20 ... 545325.htm

This prompted a local who has been exporting these same eels to Europe to apply for a special licence to harvest them at an accelerated rate, which he received.

So what?

Coupla days later, a twister appeared out of nowhere, bringing down hundreds of big trees and several km's of powerlines. Several thousand ppl still without power as they fix that up (emergency services are pretty pushed by the thirty-plus bush fires also currently burning in Vic. ). Twisters are NOT regular events in southern Aus.

What i'm wondering is, the hot water effect that revs up hurricanes off the Gulf of Mexico, does that trigger localised inland vortices as well? Does this mean living near inland waterbodies likely to suffer rapid heating is dangerous? Given how little water there is generally in inland Aus., its a bit of a bummer.

Yup, dead serious.

Cod is worshipped in the Scandinavian countries. You wouldn't believe me if I told you how much cod with potatoes costs in the finest restaurants in Gothenburg, Sweden.

You can of course still buy cod as a 250 grams block of frozen fish-like material. I wonder though if it's actually cod you're buying.

It has been proposed that all fishing for cod should be banned for many years in Sweden. I know that the Canadians did that after that they found out that the cod was virtually extinct in their waters. A decade has passed after that ban but there's still no cod to be found. It's gone.

When the cod is gone in a water, it's FUBAR:
