Personally, I think it should be our personal freedom to drive our SUVs right into a blitzkrieg crash! My only real two hopes for the future would be for life to maintain the status quo (which peak oil will not allow), or a hyper fast crash into a return of the 1700's.
Life is fine as it is now. Drive to work in the SUV, stop at the super market on the way home. Upon arrival in our warm, gas heated home, cook up some tasty vittles on the gas stove. Watching some T.V. and surfing the net is cool afterwards. Maintaining this standard of life would be grand! Using alternative energies and technologies to change our ways, yet maintaining a high standard of life, and our freedoms, would suit me to no end! But, it won't happen and we all should know why.
A new life, a return to a much simpler life, as lived by folks in the 1700's would be great too! Farm a plot of land. Defend it from the wild savages (no not Indians, rather those zombie-like urban bandits that dwell in what is left of the cities, and who make raids into the countryside). Then I'll drive my horse team to the windmill to sell my grain. Stop by my good friend the blacksmith's shop on the way home to trade some of my secret heirloom tomatoes for a new garden rake he is going to make for me. Check in with my wife to see how the soap she will be making is coming along. Finally off to the river to gather my fishing sons so we can chop a couple cords of wood together before the sunset, so we may heat our modest cabin in the days to come. Life this simple would be awesome and may someday be upon us.
Those two ends of the spectrum laid out, I think it best if it goes as quickly as possible from one extreme to the other. I don't hope for the massive die off and suffering, but neither do I wish for it to be a slow grind into decades, even centuries of suffering.
A return to a slower and simpler life could take a long, slow, and painful amount of time. I would rather be dead quick (and a fast crash might give good odds to this), than to suffer through the depletion caused restrictions, enforcements, and rationings of our foods, lives, and freedoms.
So, yes, I say drive those SUVs as fast as you can. Buy two of them. Drive one and leave the other one at home running in the driveway. Life is all about the excesses. Lets burn it all up as fast as possible people! Because, my preps are coming along nicely and I think a slow, prolonged crash will be nearly intolerable. Revisiting the depression era, only worse this time, I do not look forward to.
