Eighteen hundred and froze to death

ardon me if this has already been discussed.

In May of 1816, however, frost killed off most of the crops that had been planted, and in June two large snowstorms resulted in many human deaths as well. In July and August, lake and river ice were observed as far south as Pennsylvania. Rapid, dramatic temperature swings were common, with temperatures sometimes reverting from normal or above-normal summer temperatures as high as 95 °F (35 °C) to near-freezing within hours. Even though farmers south of New England did succeed in bringing some crops to maturity, maize (corn) and other grain prices rose dramatically. Oats, for example, rose from 12¢ a bushel the previous year to 92¢ a bushel.

snip...

Europe, still recuperating from the Napoleonic Wars, suffered from food shortages. Food riots broke out in Britain and France and grain warehouses were looted. The violence was worst in landlocked Switzerland, where famine caused the government to declare a national emergency.

If it is not one thing, it is another.

I wonder WHEN this happens again. It'll be devasting WHEN it does. Another thought is that lack of the Monsoon in India...think of how many people depend on that.

Wonder how long we could move troops from Iraq to Brazil?? Seems to be plenty of corn/crops there :)

Well, you can't eat corn all the time! Now what else is there to do with three beautiful Brazilian girls? I know one thing, if we send Frankthetank down there to get us some corn, we'll all starve here and Frankthetank will never be heard of again.

mmmhmmm, sure. Did you ever see the movie Oh Brother, where art thou? The part where the boys meet up with them three sireens (sirens) that want to love em up and turn em into horny toads as punishment for fornications?

Not sure why, but your last post brought that scene to mind.

I love that movie. John Goodman as the Bible salesman Cyclops was astounding.
