Chart showing correlation between energy price and land

Unread postby J-Rod » Sat 31 Dec 2005, 09:07:29

I guess not totally current events, but if this needs moved please do so. I saw this chart, thought it looked neat, in that it shows the direct correlation of cost of energy vs. the cost of land.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')ast week saw Alberta's biggest land sale of the year. Large tracts of land prospective for Mannville CBM were posted. Energy firms bid a record C$544 million on petroleum and natural gas exploration rights in Alberta's most recent land sale last week. Companies bid on 474,286 hectares (1 hectare=2.47acre) at an average price of $1147/ha.

Prospectors are going to have to shell out a bunch of prospective profits if they want a piece of the Alberta pie in the sky.

Wasn't at all what I was expecting from the thread title but interesting non the less ;)

Why would anyone be surprised that tar bearing soil would go up in value with the rise in oil price on World markets?

All sorts of hard assets have risen in price along with oil, so there is no specific, exclusive land--oil correlation.

There certainly is a specific land/oil correlation if your land has oil beneath it. This land will be going up as US housing prices go down.

Most of the acreage was for gas exploration, very little related to heavy oil, if any.

The players, including Shell Canada realize that without acreage they can't replinish reserves. They are betting on continuing high oil/gas prices but also have pretty full coffers at year end.

Yes, but only if you own the mineral rights to that land. Many landowners don't.
