My husband firmly believes climate change/pollution will hit us hard before peakoil come. I firmly believe this is just an excuse not to prepare for PO.

(Let's hope he's wrong... we really can't deal with a climate/pollution disaster.)

Climate change, whether PO happens or not.

If we find 10 new saudi Arabias and PO is delayed, then we keep business as usual it and do it that way.

If PO continues as all the evidence suggests, then we have more idiotic coal buring and make it worse. However I don't think coal liquification is possible under this system, so we'll only get electricity out of it (WooHoo, big deal)

So there you go, climate change is the big one. I'm not exactly alone in this view either.

There is a myriad of things that can happen..but my 'back up' is kinda on the front burner right now, with PO being on the back burner. With Peak Oil we have at least a few years to adjust our lifestyle.

But I am more concerned about WWIII breaking out over the whole Israel/Iran thing.

Here is a old Texas joke..

Have you heard what CBS is doing Survivor:Texas?

Requires 16 participants to attempt to drive from Lubbock to Austin with a bumper sticker that reads "I am a gay lobbyist here to take your bibles and guns away."

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'w')e really can't deal with a climate/pollution disaster

We really can't deal with peak oil either. At least not in a way that will be acceptable. There's not enough life boats to save everyone.

Hey, Ludi, we agree on something. :) There are so many apocalypses to choose from, it makes you realise what a special place and time this is.
One of my friends is a disaster buff, so he keeps me up to date on the various dooms we currently face. It's pretty hilarious really, how vulnerable we are.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('OneLoneClone', 'Z')ombie attack!

Yikes! that's the one thing I am not prepared for. I watched Director's Cut of Land Of the Dead again last night. Rather have nukes than zombies. At least I can sit outside and watch the Light show(should be better than any movie in HD or THX sound).
Unless, We had M.Night Shamalan Zombie attack. That would scare me worse than a Romero Zombie attack. "I see dead people, eating other people". I just could not handle flesh eating zombies with a morality message. Zombies in the Afterlife, way to heavy for me to process.
I take comfort in the Good news that if zombie attack was possible, Paladin Press would have a book out on it(survivalist humor).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')elieve me overpopulation and resource depletion will not just go away when the ball drops. ok?

Agreed, 100%. We are in SERIOUS trouble. There is absolutely NO WAY we can afford to feed ourselves without cheap energy. Petroleum dependency is going to be the death of tens of millions.

I don't subscribe to ANY apocalyptic theories and I am an optomist at heart.

I don't sweat the low probability scenarios.....I think it's a waste of time.

What I try to focus on are the higher probability scenarios like:

local/regional fast and sharp events, like:

*resource related military confrontations
*Hedge Fund collapse
*Property Bubble
*commodity spikes
*both man-made and natural disasters
*long-incubation contagions

national/international "slow burn" scenarios

*the India/China effect on resource comsumption in 5-10-20 years
*nationalization of energy resources
*currency "race for the bottom" devaluations
*high value job outsourcing
*de-globalization from increased trade barriers, increased energy costs, and/or contagions and the resulting shockwaves
*top heavy demographics and underfunded social security programs(and I'm not just talking about the US, Japan is probably the first case study)

Both professionally and personally it's necessary for me to develop reasonably good risk management to protect my interests.

At the moment, the closest thing to an apocalyptic scenario that I subscribe is a swarm of near simultaneous mid-to-high probability events with EACH having SOME impact on MANY of us, but combined will have a substantial impact on ALL of us.

Basically, a cascade of small events(relatively speaking), equalling one gigantic pain in the butt.

Wow, that’s what I think as well. I’m happy to see that I’m not the only one around here that realises the incredible danger that rocks falling from the sky poses. Not to mention that statistically speaking, Earth is overdue for a massive collision.

Check out Exit Mundi for an extensive and amusing list of our possible disasters: http://www.exitmundi.nl/exitmundi.htm

I like some of the possible technological disasters:
Artificial intelligence (Skynet taking over)
Grey goo (Nanotechnoloy gone wrong)
The Borg (Becoming assimilated by cybernetic networks)
Quantum physics (Researching an exotic type of unlimited and free energy results in blowing up a big chunk of the universe)

You know, it’s really amazing that we are here at all. Apart from the incredible set of circumstances necessary for there to be this little oasis of a planet filled with life, there is the fact that the universe is constantly trying to wipe us out. It’s like we’ve been playing the lottery for billions of years, and we keep winning. Sooner or later though, we’ll lose that cosmic lottery. Ironically it’s looking like it’s be completely our own fault, which is so stupid considering how many natural disasters could potentially take us out.

I've spent 30 years prepping for a civilizational collapse and influenza can easily be treated with nutraceuticals. Asteroid, supervolcano, nuclear holocaust; likely no amount of preparation will help. What I believe will actually happen-and it's already too late to do anything about- is runaway global warming which will raise Earth temperatures by 6 to 15 degrees F over the next 25 to 50 years: the ice caps will melt lowering the salt concentration of seawater disrupting the "thermohaline" capacity of the ocean as well as inundating entire nations (Bangladesh, Maldive Islands, lower Florida, etc) meanwhile, the permafrost will thaw releasing an unbelievable amount of methane resulting in the warmest planet Earth in 120,000 thousand years. Southern and great plains of America will probably become desert with summer temperatures approaching 130 deg F. NW Montana's climate will become subtropical. This will result in catastrophic disruption of entire ecosystem with apocalyptic dieoff of niche specific species. And we can have the satisfaction of knowing "we did it".

Anthropology/history indicates that we'll probably nuke the hell outta the place first.

Whoa! That's a good one. It's just become my new #2 after Peak Oil.
What will arrive first? Peak Oil or the Second Coming? My money is now on the latter.
