Car Buried in 1957 to Be Unearthed in '07

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A') Plymouth Belvedere that was buried in a concrete vault nearly 50 years ago as part of the state's golden anniversary celebration will be unearthed in 2007 as part of the Oklahoma centennial festivities.

The 1957 Belvedere is underground next to the Tulsa County Courthouse. Also buried with it were five gallons of gas and a case of beer.

Why 5 gallons of gas?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')ld news reports indicate the gas was buried in case internal combustion engines became obsolete by 2007 and no fuel was available.

Jeez. A Belvedere? Do they have to dig it up? If they have to, maybe they could dig it up and then replace it with a Ford Excusion. In the meantime, I estimate that with this new untapped 5 gallon reserve Peak has been postponed by .0000001 seconds.

Even funnier...if you read the article, there was some kind of contest back in 1957. The winner (or his heirs) get the car plus a $100 savings account when it's dug up.

Only the savings account was lost in the savings and loan bust.

I say they hit Neil Bush up for $1200 it would be worth now. It's pocket change to him.

Keep it buried! Keep it buried! That all we need is this thing out on the road with its 4 wheel drum brakes and stinky exhaust.

If they entomb an Excursion, i hope they put more then 5 gallons of gas with it. Try 500!

If they do that, people will be raiding it, the way tomb robbers raided the grave goods of dead pharoahs.

The Excursion will have long rotted away by the time it get's raided.
As environmentally unfriendly classics are, a Belvedere, or any other vehicle from that era makes up for it in the mechanical simplicity department.
Then there's always rust.

Rust can be repaired, so long as the basic shape of the car is in-tact. Further the oxidized metal can be returned to its earlier state and used again.

Imagine a battery electric car with an aluminum frame and fiberglass body. Barring an accident, it would practically last forever. NiMH and Li ion batteries might last 200,000+ miles before they only deliver 80% of their range, and can still be used after that, and the electric motor could easily exceed 500,000 miles...

Wouldn't that make for a pretty far out time capsule? A shame we have to waste so many resources with our disposable, gas-guzzling cars when they could be made to last much longer and not need gas. But hey, making people buy more shit is good for an economy reliant upon unlimited growth, but in a world of limited resources this is idiocy.

The Belvedere is a great car. I especially like the hemi models of the 1960s. Talk about a sleeper, they look so innocent and benign, just your ho-hum family wagon, until you mess with it at a stoplight and get raped...
The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the old growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder. ~Thomas Jefferson

The simplicity of old cars i LOVE. Its the rest of the design, from the one ply tires, to the lap belts, to the 4 wheel drums and "boat like" steering, I don't like.

I agree with electric vehicles made of AL and Fiberglass.

I've always wanted a Ford Ranger, so i could convert it to electric...
