Wit and Wisdom of The Simpsons

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Sun 18 Dec 2005, 10:44:07

I don't have a TV anymore, but when I did, The Simpsons was about all I watched. I understand that the show is popular worldwide. One time Homer got stuck in a water-slide tube because he was too fat. Once he tried to do something about it; he raised his fist to the heavens and shouted, "As God is my witness, I'll always be hungry again!" A parody of "Gone With The Wind". Seems like a good Peak Oil line. The funniest show ever was a parody of Cape Fear in which Sideshow Bob had a psychotic vendetta to kill Bart.

Someday Bart when you grow up you can be chief justice of the United States, like Warren Burger....Hmmmmmm BURGER

I just love that show.

Yes, I too love The Simpsons. Amazingly nearly every episode is still wonderful.

It's hard to remember all my favourite moments, though:

Lisa: I've made a perpetual motion machine

Homer: Go to your room! In this house we obey the Laws of Physics!

has to be a fave

And a vapid media person brainstorming for a new character for Itchy and Scratchy:

We want the original Dog from Hell

Writer: don't you mean Cerberus?

There are lots more. I bet this thread will run and run.

I like the literary and cinematic spoofs. I was telling my kids about this novel I'm reading by Jack London, The Sea Wolf, in which a literary gentleman is washed out to sea and picked up by a seal-hunting boat captained by the evil Wolf Larsen. They won't put him back to land and keep him as a menial laborer. The kids told me, "Oh, The Simpsons did a show on that! Otto, the bus driver got washed to sea and picked up by a fishing boat, they said, evil-like,'we will make you our slave!'" Then once, Dustin Hoffman did a show where he played a substitute teacher that Lisa fell in love with. Mrs. Crabapple hit on him. She put her leg up on a desk. You could see the Hoffman sub character across the room, under her bent leg, who said, "Mrs. Crabapple, you're trying to seduce me!" (The Graduate) They did, in fact, two different episodes parodying The Graduate. One time Grandpa fell in love with an old women in the nursing home. Mr. Burns stole her with his money and fancy dancing. Burns and the old lady were about getting married when Grandpa ran up to bang on a window overlooking the wedding. He pounded on the glass and screamed, "Mrs. Bouvier! Mrs. Bouvier!" They then ran out of the church together, after Grandpa fell through the broken window, and got on the last seat of a bus leaving town. Mr. Burns is a charming old evil rascal. Once he was in the bathtub and his sidekick put a top hat on his head which was too much weight and pushed the evil Burns under.

Yeah, what's not to love about the Simpsons!
But the show I like even more is "Malcolm in the Middle", some fantastic screenwriting there, you can tell they grew up in such a family as well, some things you just can't make up.

I sometimes wonder that Fox Channel is giving them such creative freedom, for example when Dewey has to sell Chocolate bars for the school, he tells some right winger that they are "America bars against terrorists" and some left winger that they are "pro choice bars"...

Simpsons rule, which is good.
They show too many re-runs though. That's bad.
But there's some episodes I've never seen before. That's good.
But the quality consistency has degraded quite a bit.

That's bad. Can I stop now ?

The Simpsons is really getting old now. It’s still funny at times though. Though mostly old...

Futurama is WAY better.
Here's some quotes:

“You win this time, gravity…”

"People said I was dumb, but I proved them."

"You're watching Futurama, the show that doesn't condone the cool crime of robbery."

"Would you kindly shut your noise-hole?"

“Space. It seems to go on and on forever. But then you get to the end and a gorilla starts throwing barrels at you.”

Leela: "Didn't you have ads in the 21st century?"
Fry: "Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball games... and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts, and bananas and written on the sky. But not in dreams, no siree. "

One of my favourite bits is in the opening sequence when they zoom into the classroom where Bart is writing lines on the board. He's writing something different every episode and I have to find out what it is. I'm always dissapointed when I miss that bit.
Kind regards, Katkinkate

Simpsons, Futurama, Tripping The Rift. My favorite shows on TV. That 70's show is pretty good too.

The amazing thing about that show is how it appeals to all age groups. 99 out of 100 kids have never seen or heard of much of the stuff the show parodies, but to them it doesn't matter.

My favorite part of that episode is where the Reverend refers to "rock and/or roll".

What's weird for me is to think that I'm 31 and that the Simpsons has been on the air continuously for over half my life. That's crazy.

My favorite episode by far was the one where Bob Dole and Bill Clinton were replaced by space aliens Kang and Kodos while campaigning for president. Homer sneaks up and pulls their masks off at a public rally and reveals them both.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')omer: America, take a good look at your beloved candidates. They're
nothing but hideous space reptiles. [unmasks them]
[audience gasps in terror]
Kodos: It's true, we are aliens. But what are you going to do about
it? It's a two-party system; you have to vote for one of us.
[murmurs]
Man1: He's right, this is a two-party system.
Man2: Well, I believe I'll vote for a third-party candidate.
Kang: Go ahead, throw your vote away.
[Kang and Kodos laugh out loud]
[Ross Perot smashes his "Perot 96" hat]

The next day, Kodos announces the result: "All hail, President Kang."

The field in front of the Capitol has now become a working ground
where humans are whipped by aliens and used to carry materials.

The Simpsons family is working too, with Homer and the kids carrying
wood, and Marge pushing a wheelbarrow of cinderblocks -- with Maggie
on top.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Marge: I don't understand why we have to build a ray gun to aim at a
planet I never even heard of.
Homer: Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.
