More "fun" at gaspricewatch.com

Unread postby Sunspot » Tue 13 Dec 2005, 14:55:55

You may remember my post a while ago that the chat room at gaspricewatch.com banned the word "peak". Ok, it was my fault... So I gave myself the screename "PeakOil", and it worked! Ha!
I left well enough alone for a while, but when I saw that the US Congress is discussing peak oil, I decided it was time to either get them to un-ban the word peak or ban me from the site.
I just got a message on the site: "your wish has been granted". So, I thought, great they un-banned "peak"...
Wrong! They banned ME! I'll be laughing for days.
So, if you're feeling like it, check out some of the chat history, I know, I'm bad! But it might be worth a chuckle to ya. I found it useful to try to condense agruments into one sentence at a time, helps my own thinking. They love chatting about peak oil over there (NOT), so feel free to drop in and say HI for me.

Most the people on that site are gonna be the kind of people rioting at the gas station when fuel gets to be 5 dollars a gallon or more. They think its the oil companies fault and that they have a right to all the cheap gas they can burn.

If $70 oil is only $3 gas, will we have to wait until oil hits $140 before we see $6 gas?

I don't see how a site that involves gas isn't interested in talking about oil depletion.

These people are the types that think that oil is actually "produced" rather than extracted, that The Market creates everything around us and has godlike power, and that--and this flies in the face of all natural laws and tendencies--humanity has an intrinsic right to burn as much gas and use as much energy as possible. It is not too surprising to me that they don't like to talk about peak oil. Such ignorance won't survive for long without its source, plentiful oil.

Thanks for the responses, and kudos to whoever has posted some nice PeakOil info over there. It's just been a "hobby" for me, I could care less that I've been banned. Funny, I too thought that discussing oil depletion would be appropriate at a site discussing gas prices. What was I thinking?? But I can still sneak in there on another computer from time to time. Heh heh...

One more update and I'll leave this alone. I just checked the site, and they've wiped all my recent posts, except the one where I get banned. But they also wiped posts of the other peakniks who posted there afterwards. So I guess anything even mentioning Peak Oil is no longer allowed there. This site has a connection to CNN - every time prices shoot up someone from the site is interviewed on CNN. So I'll bet there's something going on there. I told them to check with their "corporate masters" about this issue.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Sunspot', 't')hey've wiped all my recent posts, except the one where I get banned.

That stands to reason. People so worried about the price of fuel as to start a gaspricewatch website would not be interested in being told the price will forever increase.

Such a realization destroys all hope and negates their reason for being.

People tend to resist that.
