"That's the total number of stars in the known universe, according to a study by Australian astronomers. It's also about 10 times as many stars as grains of sand on all the world's beaches and deserts." Linque

I didn't know that there was so much goddamn sand on Earth. Why are we recycling bottles then?

What a coincidence!!! I read somewhere that it was the number of bbls of sweet crude waiting to percolate to the surface... you know... abiotic style.

Because these days, most bottles are made of plastic, not glass. That said, it doesn't hurt to recycle - reduces wastage.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('peaker_2005', 'T')hat said, it doesn't hurt to recycle - reduces wastage.

Good point! Beverages in plastic bottles are much more expensive compared to those in glass bottles, at least here in Germany. Why is this? Do plastic bottles have a shorter life than bottles made of glass or are they more expensive to clean and refill? I'm of course talking about plastic and glass bottles that are made for refilling.

This is an interesting question. Does anyone know the average life expectancy of the plastic and glass bottles? Also, if I'm not completely wrong here, plastic bottles are made of abiotic oil which we'll never run out of and glass bottles of sand which is a resource which will peak one day.

Shouldn't then all bottles be made of plastic instead of glass? Imagine the sweet cracking sound as the seal is breaking on the plastic cap when you open a 1,5 litre PET bottle of 1967 Chateau Latour...

When I think about it, I only see glass bottles for milk, special style soda (like a classic coke bottle which you can't get at all in normal supermarkets or japanese (?) soda), and alcohol...

I don't see many glass bottles in general because I don't drink much of any of the above, but we do have a certain dairy chain here where you reuse the glass bottles - and that cuts down the price of the milk a bunch.

So, in general, aluminum cans are generally cheapest here. Plastic is next. Glass is in last, unless you recycle (which saves a ton of money).

beacause it takes a lot of energy to turn sand into glass. Much more than is needed to remelt glass. The higher amount of recycleglass in your feed, the less energy (oil/gas) you need.
