Escape from New York: begins with terrorists hijacking a jetliner, flying it into a New York skyscraper. Ends with war with China.

Escape from LA: the sequel, US is now a fascist state with a hard-right born again evangelical Christian president, elections have been outlawed, premarital sex outlawed, all Muslims have been deported, and the US at war with worldwide terror network from the third world. Ends with a permanent, worldwide blackout that sets us back by 500 years.

Both are very much "B" movies and very, very stupid at times but worth a look nonetheless.

Best,

Matt

Soylent Green

Not because we will be eating processed humans, but because the standard of living it depicts will probably be close to accurate for 2022.

(the movie was set in NY of 2022 because that was 50 years in the future when the movie was filmed in 1972)
The battle to preserve our lifestyle has already been lost. The battle to preserve our lives is just beginning.

I second War of the Worlds (esp. the 2nd one). It shows an almost Kunstlerian vision of an American people not up to the times... Speilberg seems to revel in their destruction.

Spielberg has a good feel for the times. When he becomes aware of peak oil, you bet he'll do a wonderful film.

Okay, we're pretty well covered for the Peak Oil movie list.

Now, what about the post-peak oil selection?

I'm sticking with 'Low Rents of Arabia' and 'Saudi Night Fever' (etc).
