$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('smiley', 'F')lat panel displays are really one of the greatest commercial scams of this moment. All my friends and colleagues are asking when I'm going to buy one.
I agree with that. Flat panels are holding up the profits of the electronics companies and retailers. Fat profit margins in there. Which is why you see them on the catalog front pages and at the front display areas of the shops.
I
blogged this a year back, and my opinion hasn't changed much since :
Personally, I refused to buy LCD monitors to replace two CRT monitors for my home PC's. I went for the Samsung 793DF 17" CRT instead. So now we have got two of these at home. Chief reasons being, CRT's are still cheaper by far (perfect for a tight family budget), and all the same reasons above (contrast, response, lifetime). Don't talk to me about top-end LCD's with 16 ms or 25 ms response times in a Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike, Tribes, or other FPS game, for example. The CRT's have response times of less than 1 ms. Go figure who's faster!
- Talking about environment? With LCD or plasma, your post-warranty options go something like : incinerator or landfill. I gave away my (still-working but acting up) LG to the Salvation Army, and sold the Sony to the "karang guni" (local recycle-man). In both cases, the recipients have a choice to refurbish and repair the units, or at the very minimum recycle the parts and sell them for a small profit.
