BBC News 24 did 20inutes on Peak oil last night

Unread postby smiffy » Fri 09 Dec 2005, 03:51:24

BBC news 24 openely admitted Peak oil last night. Although they didnt mention Peak oil, they said that next year (2006) demand for crude will outstrip supply sending the prices into the stratosphere.

Did anyone see it?

I wish I had, if only to gauge whether the reporting has crossed the current threshold from a 'what if?' scenario (on a par with the Yellowstone Park super-volcano, and the La Palma rock slide predictions) to an actual 'this is going to happen'.

Nevertheless, I'm planning to make this Christmas memorable. God knows what it might be like at the end of 2006 - not so much because of any real impact on oil supply, but because by that time the message will have started sinking in amongst the public at large, with as yet unknown consequences, both politically and socially.

Thankfully, it wasnt a bullshit report as per CNN FOX News.

They actually showed real concern, even the anaylsts they had on were quite on the ball.

Like you said, i think that around late 2006 early 2007 reality will bite hard.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('RedJake', 'H')appy xmas then!

Thanks Redjake! The Theakstons Old Peculiar and Marstons Pedigree are already nestling happily in the cupboard, and I've put aside the 1st series of 'Bottom' and a couple of Dylan Moran gigs from my DVD club.

Is anyone else preparing for Peak Oil with such thoroughness?

I missed the report, but if they didn't say Peak Oil, then surely it is not an open admission??

One of the problems with the reports I see is that they don't make it clear that the supply shortfall versus demand is a permanent feature, but instead give the impression of a temporary blip. Even if they use the word peak, they don't spell out what this means. You might think it is obvious, but the guy in the street doesn't have a mental picture of production curves like we do.

Your absolutley right, the guy in the street thinks all is well.

The guy in the street thinks he has a secure Job, goes out and borrows ludicrous amounts of money from the bank to purchase an over valued chicken shack he calls a house. Or purchases a new BMW or a mercedes and actually thinks he is rich???

What the fuck?

I have a friend of mine who lives in new Jersey, he works for PSE&G and he calls himslef a player, because he purchased a mac mansion with an outside jaccuzzi and drives a mercedes,

He actually believes that economic growth is infinate, he takes a twice yearly vacation to Florida and likes to boast how rich he is since he came from white trash!

I think they're walking on razor blame: since demand surpassing supply is not exactly peak oil (which is a geological topic, not economic) then they didn't mention it!

Was this the business reporty thing sometime around 10-11pm?

The entire programme seemed to be about oil, oil companies, and china/india/US :) No mention of peak oil, and I got the impression they were avoiding it a bit. There was though a very nice chart of demand and supply for now and the next few years. It showed demand going up, and they omitted a supply estimate - only taking it to present :o

Yes, that was the one, about 10.00 or 11.00 since i am in Malta i couldnt tell you exactly and since i have no clock in my house only god knows what time it was.

But the BBC seems itching to tell all about PO however, it would seem they are being advised to tow the line for now.

The nature of modern news reporting means that most subjects - even famines and disasters - are treated as passing entertainment. They get a few minute's worth of coverage, then it's onto something else before the viewer gets bored and switches channels. Nothing is treated with the depth it may deserve, and most of the time there's no sense of continuity or follow-up.

Whatever dread news you might serve up for public tea-time consumption, it doesn't permeate the consciousness as anything other than titillating enetertainment (like paying to watch a horror film), as long as the twin reassurances of full supermarket shelves and petrol/gas at the pumps are in place.

Like most everyone else, the UK public will only wake up when the physical reality of the situation finally manifests itself.

(Thinks: 'I might go out and buy another case of Theakstons before this happens' . . .)

Perfect example this morning on News 24 (but airing on bbc2).

A woman was on talking about being against the Iraq war (May have been sheehan but still had sleep in my eyes). Forget what your view of the war is for a moment, I think we would all agree it is an important issue, whatever.

The very next item was about the new tory leader and the fact he doesn't have a very good hair cut.

I switched off after that.
