I was surfing the net and found this thread. There is a lot of disinformation going on about peak oil and someone needs to defend it. I would but I've got finals coming up next week

Good Luck

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')rom an economic perspective, you're absolutely right: The world economy is not about to grind to a halt when we run out of oil, because we'll switch to something else long before that happens
.

I'm curious as to what that elusive magical something else that people talk about is.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('SinisterBlueCat', 'w')hy does someone need to defend it?

Because most of the 'political discourse' is:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')id you know that Barbra Streisand, a self-proclaimed environmentalist, drives an SUV? No joke.

We are running out of oil in a few years, but NOPE: Can't drill there, can't drill there, no not even over there, hey, watch out, you're hurting the earthworms... they're people too...
OH NOES!!! TEH CARIBOU!!1!one

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')eople like to think that there is no oil left so that they can believe that "alternative energies" should be researched. When in fact this is all irrelivant because companies and energy industries are preparing for a switch of some kind and are already investing in these "alternative energies."

These industries are (1) want to make money and (2) are not stupid (or can pay money for non-stupid people to give them advice). So it logically follows that the system will take care of itself.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')bsolutely true, of course. The system will take care of itself. It should be pointed out that the system's goals are to maximize profits before all else and that this is not necessarily good for either society or the system's customers. If the system can make more money selling fuel for $50/gal than by developing alternative energy sources, then that's what it will do. It will never occur to the system to factor in what this will do to society.

They don't have any numbers.
(I'm not going to do the homework for the numbers though..)

Do they realize that housing is booming right now? And those houses are going to become more and more a liability as opposed to an 'investment'?

Also, coal is once again mentioned. It seems like we are taking a step backward - and, there is reason why coal didn't spawn suburbs and cars that I don't think can be attributed to technology or willpower.

Most people like to think that society 'progresses'. Using massive amounts of coal doesn't seem like progress in this age...

I'm not so sure that oil can be replaced - that's how the economically minded like to make it sound. The "American way of life" as it now exists can't stand 10-30 years after peak. There's demand elsewhere in the world - the oil that we now use will be demanded by the ENTIRE REST OF THE WORLD (something every American forgets about from time to time). If we are a fourth of the world-wide demand, we've got the most to lose because we import most of it... Mexico is on top of its peak.. the GOM is questionable as a reliable resource because of the hurricanes... Iraq is up-for-grabs... Saudi Arabia probably can't sustain any more than it can now...

Environmental laws and NIMBYism within the U.S. contribute VERY little in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah I know.

But the majority of the thread is like "companies are smart and they're researching alternative energies!!!!!"

Yep, once world oil peaks what country is gonna want to export their oil reserves? They are going to want to keep it for themselves. It might not be dealing with just a few percent a year decline. It could be a huge decline if the imports stop.

Then it'll be down to using military force if you want to force them to give it to you.

well, they will either panic and join peakoil.com, or they will think you are a nutbag and continue on their merry deluded way. Either way, you made a stand and I do not think it was too heavy, just straight forward and truthful.

That reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from the musical “Chess”
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')here’s no point wasting time preaching to the perverted.

Hey ashurban, I tried to extend on your points as well. I hadn't seen you say you had posted yet, so i was delighted that someone on that board had already responded.

I would say your points where well thought out. I don't think I could have put it better for the most part.
