Poll: Could you eat your dog? (graphic)

Postby Pessimist » Thu 17 Nov 2005, 23:30:25

Ok, now just about everybody has a pooch at home, an adorable, lovable
companion who is fun to kick in the sides when you feel a little edgy.

Little known to us is the fact that "Fido" harbors within itself the soul of
a bloodthursty killer. Yes, dogs have evolved over millions of years to
hunt and kill for their food. The ancestor of every dog in the world was
a WOLF.

Now what can happen in times of disaster is that people will let their dogs
go feral, because they can no longer buy canned dog food. Heck, with
the end of fossil fuels, YOU will be eating that can of dog food.

What happens when large numbers of dogs are given their freedom to
roam on their own, is that they gather up to form PACKS. Fluffy and
Bowzer will merge with all of the other "pups" in the neighborhood in order
to form more effective hunting bands!

What do they hunt? In the absence of any other prey, the hunter will
become YOU. This is not a fairy tail. This has happened in the past,
and will happen in conditions of the breakdown of civilization.

My suggestion for people who want to be good neighbors is to KILL
AND EAT YOUR DOGS. They will then not be allowed to form hunting
packs and become a real danger to children and others who cannot
escape or defend themselves.

Considering the large number of dogs, just about everyone has a
dog or two, I don't consider it to be unjustified to kill and eat your
neighbors dogs as well. Think of it as a RESPONSIBILITY.

The ramifications of PO are fascinating and seemingly endless.

I don't have much problem eating anything that will healthily sustain my life. I don't think psychological inhibitions leftover from an insulated culture will get in my way of staying alive.

Depends on the dog. The German Shepard, no way.

The blue heeler mutt that digs, chews, chases the cat, and gets nasty with the kids?

Eat it? didn't think of that. I am about to kill it though.

I was planning on a turkey, but maybe dog would be good instead.

As for the idea of dogs forming packs and roaming around causing a menace to people, this is true. We live in Chicago, and my husband used to be in a place where he used to commute to his old job by bike. He was going through this neighborhood, and a pack of dogs were there, came right out from an alley..and as this was a factory zone, the neighborhood wasn't full of people walking about, coming and going, watering the lawn, etc.
So, they spot him and they think "free meal on wheels" and they speed up! He figures he is on the menu, and they really are feral and ferocious, and are not kidding around, him being a big guy, he speeds on and BARELY eludes them! In fact, he told me they were literally snapping at his heels. If he would have had a flat or hit a bump, he would have had them all over him.
Feral dogs are nothing to kid around with, heck, any dog you have to watch out for, unless you know it. Especially living in a city, where folks have pit bulls for protection, but don't know how to take care of them, have kids, and then wonder why their kid and the neighbor's kid was mauled. Duh.

All dogs will become wild when they join a pack. It's just their nature, it's how they survive. I think Pessimist must have been reading "BuckShots Trapper Tales".

You can take it to the next level if you have a freezer, and be the neighborhood butcher.Get that special marinate sauce recipe and you can be selling steak tips, ribs, shoulder. Now that I think of it,a german shepherd is about the same size as a sheep when they are both skinned and gutted.

One book I have suggests that a dead dog would be good to go in the bottom of a hole in which you are planting an apple tree. - I suppose that you would then 'enjoy' the benefit of the dog over a number of years and not just in one or two sittings.

I guess I will bury our dog somewhere on our land. I am not sure about under an apple tree, although we plan to plant some next year. The dog is old, but should still have a couple of years left in him, but we are not planning to get another one when he dies.

BTW Asmiov has a good description, in foundation and Earth, of a world being overrun by dogs after humans disappeared from the scene.

Along the lines of pack behavior and burying dogs under a trees; we’ve got three German Shepard dogs, one 3 years old, the other two 5 month old pups. They killed two of our younger barn cats within a 1 week period. I had some willow trees to plant so I popped the dead cats at the bottom of the holes and planted the trees on top of them.

No, they weren’t pussy willows.

Dogs, useful ones not ankle biters, are worth more alive than dead in a post-apocalyptic situation. That's why they're "man's best friend".

They can hunt, retrieve, herd, haul, track, rescue, protect...etc

Eat My dog? No.

My husband and I have been joking about eating the pets if hard times arrive. We've decided the dogs are too useful; they will protect us from nasty humans and roving dog packs, they're great bed-warmers on a cold night, they will eat almost anything that we eat along with many things that we wouldn't touch with a stick. They could also take down a bull if we told them it would be fun (or tasty).

The cats would have to go in the pressure cooker for hours with plenty of spices and might still be too icky to eat so we would let them go to fend for themselves.

All things considered if warfarin becomes rare peak oil you are going to want a cat or two around for rodent controll, and maybe a rat terrier too. There are good and valid reasons for both to be around the home which lacks rodent poisen's in cheap and large quantities.

how about training a pack of dogs to hunt people? and if one of the alpha dogs challenges you, you have to kill him, of course, so teh rest of the pack respects you. imagine that, though, your own dog pack to take on the gangs of marauders. Plus, the dogs get to eat the losers!

No, I will never eat my pets. Never have I been spectacularly popular and I am mostly disgusted by people...but in my animals I have found kindship, kindness, understanding and companionship.

I would sooner eat some of the a-holes I have met in the course of school and business....some with ease and pleasure.

But if I must die, I will die with dignity....not eating my friends or family.

some of you scare me.

If I had dogs, I would probably just turn them loose. I figure they deserve a fighting chance at survival as much as anyone.
