Am i a bad person?

Unread postby weirdo27 » Mon 14 Nov 2005, 23:21:44

Even thugh i know the world is coming to an end and i mean the world as we see it now i still like for instance wnat to enjoy life. Im planning on buying a car soon just for work and nothing more. Since its impossible tot ake it by bus. Walking is unreasonable. School buses are available so i take those? Is it that bad of a thing that i still want to keep doing the things i am doing and live life before i even knew about peak oil? I think i might be in denial. or something

You're probably not a bad person, but some proof-reading wouldn't hurt.

I figure total meltdown won't happen for atleast a few years or more (if ever)

The US still has a lot of troops/bombs/subs/tanks that it can use to roll over any economics obstacles (Venezuela/Iran) in order to maintain status quo as long as possible.

Long term is what scares me (10+ years). By this time oil production should be on a good slope downward, and unless nukes are built pronto, i fear for my life and others.

Don't give up just yet!

I have to agree with you, I feel that we are okay for the next few years and that our problems will really kick into gear within the next 10 years. I just hope I am physically and mentally prepared for when that time comes. :(

The world certainly isn't coming to an end, and there's no reason you can't enjoy yourself. :-D Nothing wrong with buying a car. Find yourself a used Toyota Echo or something like that.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he US still has a lot of troops/bombs/subs/tanks that it can use to roll over any economics obstacles (Venezuela/Iran) in order to maintain status quo as long as possible.

Thats exactly what I worry about is the resource wars. That they are gonna start a draft to help keep the status quo going as long as possible. They don't have enough troops right now for any more military adventures.

They are undermanned right now and bogged down in Iraq.

Peak oil is gonna be bad enough as is. But human reaction to it and trying to keep the status quo going is going to make it all that much worse.

The world certainly wont end but our way of life will be extemely different. I tried explaining that we will no matter what technologies we come up with in the future we will never get as much energy as we do from oil so either way we look at it this way of life is not sustainable and globalizatio;n ;is going to crash. That still does not stop me knowing that from wasting energy.

Weirdo, I went to Linens 'n Things the other day, and found 200 thread count sheet sets for 30.00 a pop. Made in India, I think. I was elated. The fact that people are likely suffering in hot factories making hardly any money made no difference to me. I'm even thinking of going back there and getting 10 sets, so I don't have to buy sheets for at least a decade.

I can rationalize it practically, on peak oil grounds, but what it boils down to is this-- Despite what I preach and what I know, I have lapses. I'll probably have to run a gauntlet of angry third world factory workers snapping me with wet pillow shams, in order to get into heaven.

You have to buy a car to get around. Cut yourself some slack. Just get a fuel efficient one. Look at it this way--if you bought a donkey and a cart, it might be hard on the donkey, it might panic in traffic and you might both get killed.

Why do you think there are alot of doomers on this site. Even after knowing, it becomes really hard to change. And it requires resources to some degree. I have neither, so yeah i probably still consume almost as much as i used to. But i am starting to change, and i did include the idea of gas going up when i picked this appartment. My wife got really mad at me about that, because she liked our old appartment. That is, until gas went to 3 bucks a gallon. Then it was like i was like, wow, how did you know that. I was like, i didn't know that was going to happen, but i sure did know gas shocks where going to happen. Just didn't know it was going to be a hurricane.

Having reread my thread, I have to take some of it back. No, I won't go back and buy more cheap sheets. That would be kind of a lousy thing to do. Wouldn't it be great, though, if stuff was that cheap and noone was suffering for it, and it wasn't somehow destroying the eco-sphere?

Hey don't feel bad its the American way. This is the greatest country on earth and we deserve cheap items made by 3rd world slave labor. Just like we deserve countries to sell us their cheap oil since we already used all our cheap oil up. And if they don't sell it we will kill them for it.

the higher the thread count, the softer and smoother the fabric. 200 is really soft and smooth, unlike the burlap I sleep in. :?

At least you're honest, we're all bad people in the west.

The worst ones are the ones who try and deny it while at the same time driving around and shopping at the supermarket.

Yea there we go atleast im honest about being a bad person...... I know im not gonna be able to change my habits until its to late i probably still wont knowing me. I love energy to much its ashame its not something i will have in the future. So for now im gonna enjoy my horrible lifestyle. Its great though because i get to live in the most prosperous time in human history and get to be around in the biggest collapse of human civilization in history so its all good. Thats assuming i dont die in the die offs of the population. maybe if i make it to 80 i can tell stories to kids.

Even if you continue to live a high energy lifestyle at least practice dealing with the realities of a low energy one.
Grow something edible if you got a dirt patch at your disposal, and cook some things from it. This thanksgiving I made a pumkin pie from a home grown pumkin for the first time, for instance.
Go somewhere on the local public transportation just so you are comfortable using it if necessary. At least learn where all the nearest transport stops are, where the busses that serve them go, and what the fare is.
Turn the power off for a day or two on purpose, get familiar with the problem it causes, and think of ways to deal with them.

Yeah, I love this way of life also. I love having plenty to eat and plenty of variatey to eat. I love computers, video games, the internet, and being able to watch movies. I love having central heating. I love being able to take a hot shower on demand. I love being able to travel around cheaply and easily.

If we have a fast and complete collapse of civilization, I know that my chances of surviving are very slim. And even if I could somehow manage to survive it I'm not sure if I'd even want to.

Peak oil really does suck. I guess I'm just happy that I was invited to the party. Even if I was invited near closing time.
