Can this site be sued?

Unread postby doufus » Sun 13 Nov 2005, 06:34:46

Not really an economics topic, but the closest i could find.

Stemming from my argument about socially irresponsible doomerism-
if people read the doomers and make radical changes to their life
that cost them time, money and emotional damage, can this site
and presumably it's moderators be sued?

Worth thinking about a discliamer here.

I mean, financial sites have disclaimers. Aircraft homebuilder sites
have disclaimers.

But it's your house I suppose.

I know one or two folks who have already gone ahead and done that. Wish them all the best, shrug, who knows.

Me, methinks I'll be just attempting the Jay Hanson thing as he suggested. It's a little tricky going though, the first million, not to mention the first *billion* ...

I'd say the operative phrase here is "caveat emptor". One can "buy the idea", but as long as one didn't exactly *pay* anyone here real money for having the idea ...

Given the fear factor many sites have about anything they say- and
no-one bought anything or handed over money- it seems odd that
a dislaimer isn't here. Not that a good lawyer couldn't shred that in
a second either, but it's an interesting issue.

Wonder if Gary North got sued over his Y2K advice- you know
flee to the hills, buy my books and videos and subscribe to my
newsletter.

A bit more blatant example of course, but then did those alcoholics
REALLY sue Jim Beam for not putting a warning label on the bottle?

How many disclaimer threads are you gonna start Dufus?

Please see the Terms of Service in the menu.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

As the owner of the domain name, I have been threated with lawsuits like a half-dozen times in just the last year.

Most often, people are TO'd by what this site publishes. Plus people want to steal the domain name. Plus posters sometimes re-publish articles that could be copywrite violations. Haven't gone to court yet.

Bad idea, the domain name should be owned by a non-profit with no assets. Unless " non-profit with no assets" describes you. :P

The moderators shouldn’t need to worry about disclaimers because apparently they think civilisation is going to collapse. Why would you worry about getting sued when you think TEOTWAWKI is imminent?

Because a gun battle might be preferable to being sued maybe.
