Banjos and Mandolins, melody and music from a Time Of Exuberance. And we can't leave out the fiddles! All hail Bill Monroe!

Yep.
I like newgrass bluegrass, though, more than a lot of the older bluegrass - Sam Bush, Bela Fleck's Bluegrass Sessions (played with Sam Bush among others), AKUS, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage - there's lots of good stuff out there today.

We went and saw the Down from the Mountain tour a couple years ago. Great show. Ralph Stanley, Allison Krauss, The Whites, Ricky Skaggs. Got autographs too :).

I've got a Fender Resonator guitar - though I play it like a guitar, not like a dobro (haven't found anyone to teach me dobro yet) and a Yamaha 12 string. Love to sit around and pick and sing when I get the chance.

I'm an old time fiddler.

I prefer "pre-grass," pre-Civil-War tunes up through the 20s.

Clawhammer banjo and fiddle.

Public domain tunes played in the kitchen.

The difference between bluegrass and Old Time is the difference between sheetrock and horsehair plaster.

Bluegrass musicians play too fast for dancing, play in weird keys, go off on improvisation breaks, and generally show off. They're fabulous musicians.

Old timers play the melody line over and over again, all together, at dance speed, with fiddles sometimes retuned to make the playing easy.

Bluegrass musicians use the tunes to showcase their talents.
Old time musicians use their talents to showcase the tunes.

Old time music: better than it sounds, harder than it looks.

The one thing I miss about CA is The Strawberry Bluegrass Festival held twice a year at Camp Mather just outside Yosemite. We went at least once a year since our kids were in diapers - many years it was our only vacation.

It has to be the best festival – well perhaps after Telluride. We saw everyone you could name up there.

I remember standing around someone’s campfire at 3am listening to Sam Bush, Tim O’Brien, Brian Sutton and a bunch of campers jamming and passing a jug – amazing.

High Lonesome in the pines - if you like that kind of music you really need to go at least once. http://strawberrymusic.com

I love bluegrass, I'm not too familiar with too many artists but I do have a Bill Monroe best of collection that gets a lot of play.

I'm a pianist/singer (jazz, gospel) so I appreciate the high level of musicanship and impovisation that these guys exhibit.

I have always liked bluegrass but its not until I moved out fo the city a few months ago that I found a group that plays. I like playing more than listening. if I want to listen I'll just pick up my guitar. but since I moved here I found a bluegrass group that lets anyone and everyone come play every two weeks. its sooooo cool.

HAYSEED DIXIE-Great stuff, Bluegrass meets AC/DC. I just picked up their newer album Kiss my Grass! (tribute to Kiss). Great covers! My favorites are "Let's put the X in Sex" and "Calling Dr.Love", I just can't describe it. Genius!

I played bluegrass mandolin for a few years until I figured out that my fingers won't move as fast or as accurately as they need to. :)

I still listen to folk, bluegrass, old-time, and other stuff as the mood takes me. As with other genres, there's some great stuff out there.

I make tapes of music with everything good. Jazz: anybody like Ornette Coleman? Charlie Parker. Bill Monroe. Old time R&B. Beatles, Rolling Stones. Dylan. Gerry Mulligan, Lester Young. Ornette Coleman is a very enigmatic and amazing talent with a unique idea of what music is, and he sure does tickle my auditory nerves, sends shivers. Sun Ra. Brubeck. Stanley Brothers. Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. You gotta hear Joe Henderson singing 'Snap Your Fingers'!

My husband and I are big Bluegrass fans. Dale plays guitar, banjo, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, autoharp and several other instruments. He is on the Lee Marcus email group and does lots of work with tabs there. We take in any Bluegrass concert when we can.We really enjoyed Mountain Heart at a concert in Michigan when we still lived up there. And we saw and heard Doc Watson and many other wonderful artists. The guy who sings "Oh, Death" and I can't remember his name right now has voice was so powerful, I was in awe.

Oh Annie, I’m sure that movie was great, but I’ve seen the Clinch Mountain Boys several times; and In My not so Humble Opinion; that song is only a tiny and well promoted portion of his contribution.

As Doc Watson said, this stuff gets popular every 20 years or so and you have to make some money when you can.

Dig a little deeper….

(Man; that song is soooo down)

I was just commenting on Ralph Stanley's voice...not promoting a movie. Dale and I heard his band at a music festival in Lansing Michigan and we just caught the tail end of it. Ralph Stanley was singing..."Oh, Death" and his voice was awesome. I have been listening to bluegrass since I was a little girl...what should I dig for.

BTW, Ornette Coleman was from Texas. He won the prestigious MacArthur Genius Award. He's still alive. No one musical style is enough for me. I love Bluegrass, but Jazz is tops. From the 30's through the 50's was it's heyday. I don't have much affection for contemporary jazz though. Least not when I listen to the radio to try and catch what's happening. Something has been lost. Those classic era Jazz Greats were unbelievably rich in musicianship and talent.

In the 80s, I used to perform at a theatre in Harlem (NYC) that rented out rehearsal space to Coleman in the evenings. He would practice there several times a week, just blowing for hours. It was really a treat to listen to him.

In the old days, the jam session was the place where musicians competed with each other and honed their craft. They would get together after their gigs and play for hours into the early AM. Nowadays that tradition is lost, there are a lot less jazz clubs nowadays, there aren't as many places to play, and jazz is a music mostly learned in college. Also, jazz was the popular music of the day so there was ample opportunity to play at all manner of venues, from weddings to Saturday night dances to house parties etc. These days recorded music has largely taken the place of live music in those situations. When jazz stopped being a popular form of music, and people stopped dancing to it, it became more of a high art, and less accessible to many people. It's lost much of that "hotness" and immediacy.

Lucky for us, we have all these fantastic recordings from back in those days. Here in San Diego, we have a Jazz radio station at the local Community College http://www.jazz88online.org/index.php . I really only like it when they go back in time to the era you wrote about, swingbolder.
