Yeah, he's much better than the previous guy (Craig Kilborn, I think).

.

It looks like a rerun of Atlas Shrugged, the gutting of America. Thugs and criminals have taken over the US government and they are emptying the Treasury. Considering the new Patriot Act additions, it appears that when they are finished with the National Trust they will be starting on the gutting of the American public. It looks like it’s time to start hiding your money in the old coffee can in the back yard. It had, also, better be in gold or silver.

I hope spec can go and straighten that Stewart guy out. On the other hand all of em do the same thing. Find an honest politician and I will come take your LSD away for my own consumption. No, you may not use Bartlet!
You observed it from the start
Now you’re a million miles apart
As we bleed another nation
So you can watch you favorite station
Now you eyes pop out your sockets
Dirty hands and empty pockets
Who? You!

Thanks great link, there is even a story about ethanol! And did you see the one he did about the "oil cycle"? I have the slight feeling that Jon is PO-aware...

I am a big fan of Jon Stewart, it's really weird that especially many young people in the US see him as their number one source of news, a fake news show, and even weirder is that they are rightly doing so!

But I guess it is like in medieval times when the jester was the only one allowed to tell the truth about TPTB.

Daily Show: The Price Of Oil

Unread postby Free » Sun 13 Nov 2005, 03:24:08

Forgive me if this has been posted before, but if you haven't seen this you just have to: hilarious clips of the Daily Show about the testimony of the majors CEOs before congress, and the reasons why oil prices are so high...

(it's the clips "Petrol Sounds" and "The Price of Oil") Comedy Central :-D

Oh yes it is, I love it! It sort of gives me back my hope for America... (because the truth is: we Euros love you and don't want you going down the drain - but on the other hand the only reason I say this could be that I am quite drunk now... :P )

I love TDS, but in the Oil episde just perpetuates the political/economical oil price myth. I think it's possible that if a bunch of us mailed him about the idea of peak oil(I would avoid dieoff.org), he might just work it in there next time he talked about oil. Or not. Couldn't hurt to try in any case.

Official show mail adress is this, in case anyone else is willing to give it a shot:

Actually this is the great idea and I thought the same at the end of the "Price of Oil Clip" when Jon said that the reason for the high oil prices must be a secret cabal of the Jews, Cheney, Magic Johnson and Ayatollah Khomeini, because he can't think of a better reason - of course every POer in that moment thinks: "I fu**ing can!"

Especially if you think that for a very large proportion of the young US-populace TDS is their primary news source it would be great if they would do something about PO - on the other hand, how??

Invite Colin Campbell and Matthew Simmons and talk about TEOTWAWKI??? Not really funny...

Nonsense, there's plenty of room for Bush humor in there. And Jon can get somewhat serious at times. I watch on and off cause I don't have a TV in my dorm, but over summer I remember an episode where he had Fareed Zakouri(sp?) from newsweek on to discuss about terrorism. Also, there was that episode with that guy that wrote a book called "100 people who are ruining america" and jon ripped on him mercilessly, saying that the focus should be on politicians, not hollywood celebrities. So he clearly has an agenda/stance he tries to get across. If we can somehow get him to see a balanced view of the peak oil situation. LATOC coupled with the ASPO might be a decent balance, I think he would bite.

Alright I am convinced, now you only have to manage to convince Jon himself... :)

How about this:

"Dear Jon,

I love your show - but I have to tell you about something important: Do you know a guy called Hubbert? No?
Well ok. Or about Ghawar? No?
Ok I will try to keep it simple: We are fu**ed!"

Well, #1, you gotta get him to open the envelope

So Something like,

Your name
The Answer to your question about oil(or something provocative, but not alarmist)
Address

on the envelope.

then,

Dear Jon,
On a recent show, you asked "Who was behind the rise in oil prices?" because you didn't know.

Well, I have an answer for you. But it's not a person, exactly.

I'm sure you know that prices go up when demand exceeds supply. And I bet you already know that oil is a finite resource. Put the two together and you get the statement that some day, oil demand will exceed supply raising the prices. Has to, right? Only question is when.

Well, a petroleum geologist tried to figure that all out about 50 years ago. His name was hubbert, and he said that oil production followed a path, where production at any field would increase, then reach a peak and decrease as oil pressure fell. Then he said this could apply to all oil production and said that US would hit a peak in 1970. It did.

Fast forward 35 years. Going back to our first paragraph, it's pretty obvious that worldwide oil production has to peak sometime too right? Well it's about to. ( and so on so forth, toss in some facts about oil discoveries, decline production in major countries, India, china, couple estimated dates, how we aren't anywhere near ready to switch to another source yet)

I think you can see that this is a serious issue. And as usual, Bush doesn't address it. What's worse, people don't know, or don't want to know that it could happen. I mean everyone's told that we still have 40 years of oil left right? No one bothers to notice that its the rate that the stuff comes out that matters. I know I didn't. I think you could do a lot of good by working it into your show. People need to know, and you're someone they will listen to. Plus, the potential for seriously ragging on Bush is huge.

I think you'll probably look the issue up if you take it seriously, but here's a couple sites to get you started.

LATOC(He's kinda pessimistic, but he's got his facts straight)
ASPO

Hope you consider this issue seriously and don't just think I'm a wacko outright. Either way, love the show and I'll keep watching as long as you guys can stay on air. :P

Something like that, I think, might work. It's what I plan on sending in. I think if we could get a few dozen to send things like this in, we stand a good chance of him looking at it.

But maybe he's already funded by oil companies. Who knows? Can't trust anyone these days :(

Anyway, I'm sending one in, hope others join.
