Energybulletin.net Dig At Peakoil.com?

The situation is very serious, scary even. But plenty of people dig into the peak oil problem until they become obsessed with it. But what, really, is there to say? I wonder all the time, and have said so, about the role of humor in this.

The situation's trivial, just a variation on the log curve. It's the people that scare me, especially the serious ones!

Well, peakoil.com does have great content, which is why I keep coming back.

After a while one gets tired of the jokes, and one has heard the all opinions. I get tired of opinions -- even if I agree with them -- even if they are MY opinions.

That's the problem with a website that is devoted only to opinon: it's predictable. One needs news, facts and analysis to liven things up.

Hello Bart. You were always the lively one at Energybulletin.net. Am I right about the link? Remember The Inheritors? Shared values: literature. Say hi to Liam, he seems to have a harder time with leaving the political games behind. Politics won't matter here pretty soon.

Hello PMS,

No, I'm not the lively one. I'm the stodgey old guy! You're right though, we share an interest in literature and The Inheritors.

About politics, I'm interested in almost any point of view and skeptical of them all. That's my training as a journalist. As you say, peak oil is interesting because it throws out all our preconceptions about politics.

I don't think politics will disappear, only that our old categories won't make much sense anymore.

At the same time, this is an exciting time to be alive because so many ideas are becoming relevant:

Deep ecology, traditional values, Marxist political analysis, thermodynamics, the economics of agriculture, self-sufficiency. Perhaps a growing role for the military and a resurgence of religion.

There's so much to learn -- why waste time repeating the same old opinions?

The reason PeakOil.com has a steady diet of opinions and jokes is that the forums are highly interactive. Energybulletin.net is read-only to most of the world.

Right. There's a place for many different kinds of sites.

I'm glad that there is such a wide-open, super-democratic forum as peakoil.com. I'm also glad that there are other sites which are more structured and selective

The challenge I would like to throw out is how to raise the level of the quality on all PO sites. Assuming that PO is serious, isn't it important to have good information and analysis?

I'm especially interested in those writers who are willing to do the research, the hard thinking and the wordsmithing to come up with compelling posts and essays. Some sites I'm watching are The Oil Drum, Gristmill, WorldChanging, plus a number of personal sites.
