I am seriously considering offing myself come the new year. I say that because my (precious) brother is coming to visit Dec 28th. The family will be together and then I can at least make them understand my reasoning. I mean, I am just going to let them know that I'm actually happier not being on this planet right now and I'll see them on the other side.

I really don't see any good reason to stay beyond keeping them from sadness. But if I can alleviate that, then the problem's taken care of, isn't it? The news simply gets worse every day, does it not? Not one good peice of news in months and it only gets worse.

I say if you DON'T want to die right now, then you're the crazies.

Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad,
Other things just make you swear and curse,
When you're chewing life's gristle,
Don't grumble,
Give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
[whistle]
Always look on the light side of life.
[whistle]

If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten,
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps.
Just purse your lips and whistle.
That's the thing.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
[whistle]
Always look on the right side of life,
[whistle]

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin.
Give the audience a grin.
Enjoy it. It's your last chance, anyhow.
So,...

Always look on the bright side of death,
[whistle]
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
[whistle]

Life's a piece of shit,
When you look at it.
Life's a laugh and death's a joke it's true.
You'll see it's all a show.
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
Always look on the right side of life.
[whistle]

Always look on the bright side of life!
[whistle]

To what purpose? Isn't it all bullshit?

To extrapolate more;

Yes, I can live a simplier lifestyle. I could care less if I ever get to drive a nice car or watch "The Tonight Show" ever again. I would actually prefer an existance where me and the fam live in the family house together with no power. Just warming ourselves by the heat of the fire and sitting around talking, playing cards and revelling in each other's presence, being thankful for the food we get (govt rations wouldn't even bother me!) We' d have time to go on walks together. Play board games. (as silly as that sounds). Talk. Play cards. Read great literature. Just the sort of stuff we do on our camping trips pretty much. At the end of the day, say the Lord's Prayer and tucker in for another night by the fire. I get misty right now even thinking of it.

But that's probably not going to happen, is it? I haven't the skills or the property to plant a garden. If the economy is going the way you say it is, I'll never pay back my 7K college loans. We won't have the family house. And worst of all, I'll probably never get my brother back. And that tears me apart. Even in that scenario, food would probably be scarce and the collapse of society is just outside that door, starvation and desperation are the order of the day.

Rather just get to heaven quicker, frankly.

It's used to point out a thread that either myself or other Mods need to pay a little extra attention to.

Same as flagging messages in your email program.

Means she moved the post to where no one can read it, AGAIN. No one reads the psychology forum. Move this back, please? Moving it to a less active forum is pretty much censorship. Please note there is never more than 2 people browsing the forum at any given time. Usually it's zip.

Ok, thanks. Well DJ that's one bit of good news for the day. Madpaddy has learnt something new which is a rare event. As my schoolteachers used to say to me, "You'll never be mindnumbingly bored because there's not much mind there to numb" or my personal favorite. "the only way you'll pass that exam paper is to eat it".

This is definitely not appropriate material for the Peak Oil Discussion forum. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and put it in Open Discussion; but explicit discussions involving planned suicide could put us in very dubious territory insofar as running the site is concerned.

Understood.

But I don't see how it's not appropriate. It's most definately related to peak oil. Just as much as a DieOff or a KillOff is anyway, no? WHat's the big diff? Those talk about millions or billions of deaths. I'm talking about one insignifacant once.

I'll have to agree with you on the bad news. I think we're in a long term bull market of bad news.

However, if it's just news that's bothering you. Take your TeeVee out in the back and shoot it. Light your computer on fire and then buy a ticket to the some remote island in the bahamas and sit on the beach and watch the waves. Or hell you live in Idaho "the wilderness state" go lose yourself in the Frank Church / River of No Return Wilderness or the Owhyhee Canyonlands.

Not sure if you like the outdoors, but man Idaho is a great state. If you get outside and get away from the bullshit you'll realize that life is going on as it always has. The birds and the trees and the animals and the plants don't give a flying phuck about peak oil or the state of the economy.

There's more than one way to "off yourself." As one guy said "the secret of life is to die before you die and realize there is no death." Why the headlong rush in to oblivion? Death will catch up with you soon enough. Get out of your head.

Okay, I SERIOUSLY don't understand your logic.

I am not a bird or a plant, am I? Shooting my TV and not using my computer is pretty much the same kind of "ignoring the evidence" that we here accuse the masses of doing is it not?

Seriously, I don't see how watching birds and plants is going to do anything. Thanks for the input tho.

Good post seldom_seen.

Quite the opposite to DJ, I just hope that noting happens to me before I get to see all this pan out. Sure, I worry about my family and all that but there may be upsides to all this.

Ten things to look forward to with PO. (hep me out here)

1. You get to see your neighbour with his 7 series BMW scratching in the dirt for worms.

2. No more building motorways through ancient historical ruins etc.

3. More community spirit because a problem shared is a problem halved

4. No more vehicle tax and insurance

5. No more reality TV shows

6. No more cosmetics industry

......

Problem is you're viewing this too simplistically IMHO. Seeing your neighboor scratch for worms? You find people suffering to be funny? Well that's just the opposite for me. Community spirit? Pardon me, but the logical doom scenarios just don't point to that sort of thing. You're probably thinking "Banding together for farming" or something like that. Ideally, yes, but what happens in between what we have now and an existence like that ain't gonna let it happen. Societal collapse equals chaos.

I'm begging you, if you're just going to add flippant remarks, don't post on my thread. I'm really quite serious.

DJ,

I'm not being flippant. Okay my neighbour doesn't even have a BMW but my point is that we have become too materialistic IMO and PO will put an end to that. How is killing yourself going to help your family and friends. Would it not be more constructive to learn all you can so you can help the ones you love get through the hardship.

Presumably killing yourself will devastate your family. Believe me I have seen the results that suicide has had on families and almost invariably it destroys them.

I'm not making a logical argument. I said get out of your head. There's many ways to do that without actually ending your life.

Go down to the navajo reservation and take some peyote or something. You can't kill yourself. Because "yourself" doesn't even exist. It's just a contruct of your logical mind. The same voice that wants to kill you.

Actually contrary to what the title suggests JohnDenver who maintains the blog does not deny the inevitability of the Peak, rather pokes holes in the arguments of the doomers and the hysteria that has become synonomous with the term Peak Oil. Definetly worth glossing over some of his posts.
Here is a link to his index
http://peakoildebunked.blogspot.com/200 ... index.html

There is no denying that we have a serious problem, but the site does expose that many doomer arguments are based on misleading facts and false reasoning.
