Peak oil energy fund?

Discussions about the economic and financial ramifications of PEAK OIL

Peak oil energy fund?

Postby Clouseau2 » Wed 26 Oct 2005, 15:24:35

I haven't seen a discussion about this here yet, but I apologize if I'm repeating an already posted topic.

With all the petroleum experts and investment experts here, you'd think some of them together and create a "peak oil" mutual fund.

It would be setup to provide a good return in light of our future reality.

I'm no economist/geologist/expert investor, but I imagine it would hold a combination of inflation protected securities & commodities, stock in oil & gas companies, alternative energy, etc.

If someone HAS thought of this already, what's the ticker symbol?

Depending on how much money you're working with you might be better off just picking the top 4 or 5 energy stocks - ie. make you're own fund. Pick a gold miner, the best refiner, the best exploration, oilsand, alternative, and nuclear company.... No sense in paying some fund 3% a year to pick stocks if you know exactly what kind of companies you want to invest in.

Wouldn't want to be seen as bragging but my Vanguard Energy has howled for the entire 15 months I've had it...and no 3% expense ratio either. You're best off just buying some energy/natural resources/commodities ETFs, unless you just like researching companies...

Fossil_fuel I believe you are talking about Sprott Asset Management but take note it is a Canadian based company.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('falser', 'D')epending on how much money you're working with you might be better off just picking the top 4 or 5 energy stocks - ie. make you're own fund. Another interesting possibility might be iShares Goldman Sach Natural Resources ETF (NYSE:IGE). Most of the fund is in oil and oil service companies, but also in other companies related to natural resources. Fees are less and 1%.
