Beliefs of Joe Public

Unread postby rogerhb » Tue 25 Oct 2005, 16:48:43

According to commondreams:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Gordon Livingston', '2')004 Harris poll on religion is instructive. Ninety percent of adult Americans professed a belief in God. More interesting, half believe in ghosts, nearly one-third believe in astrology and more than one-fourth believe that they were reincarnated from other people. Two-thirds believe in the devil and hell (but very few expect that they will go there themselves).

Which is interesting especially because some of these beliefs are contradictory. And looking at the stats it looks like a large number of people are holding contradictory beliefs. I consider traditional Christian belief to be contradictory to Astrology and reincarnation.

People here tend to categorize themselves as Christian just by default, even if they believe in astrology, reincarnation, and whatnot. That might account for the seeming discrepancy.

In the UK people are Church Of England unless deemed otherwise.

That's a great observation. Sometimes counting up the 'Christians' or 'Catholics' is an exercise in silly statistics. When the last Pope died the stats were always quoted about 'x' number of Catholics, etc. A writer pointed out that a good chunk of those 'x' Catholics (especially in Western countries) didn't believe in Catholic faith any more than they did in the Easter bunny. In Canada the population of Quebec ,etc. is added up and thrown into the pot....not valid as Quebec has the lowest church going attendance in Canada and the highest numbers of atheists. The same in France, etc. France, for decades has not been a majority Catholic country except on paper. I'm from quebec and have 4 siblings. We're all listed somewhere as 'Catholic' even though 4 of us are atheists and the fifth, the least bright, is a born again Christian.

I loved the example set by the previous White House buffoon (Reagan) taking advice from Nancy's astrologer. Yup, that's who I would ask about foreign affairs.
