Harriet Miers Supreme Court Nomination

Unread postby Midnightblue » Wed 19 Oct 2005, 19:42:32

I don't know about you guys .. but I am a little bit
concerned about the Harriert Miers deal. I've a
conservative by nature -- but do want a lot of
diversity on the higher court .. especially when it
comes to the real big issues.

Does anyone know anything about her voting record or
anything like that?

I found some information about her here:
http://www.townhall.com/blogs/c-log/J%2 ... 59236.html

and the homepage of this site seems to have some
updated news:
http://www.townhall.com

but seems like a lot of stuff to read thru .. can
anyone give me an overview?

GWB made an extensive study of all lawyers and judges who might be qualified to serve on the SC and it just happened that his personal lawyer was most qualified :o .

Can somebody can explain to me what's the big deal about Miers? I'm not American so I'm having a hard time understanding what's seem to be the problem. She seems to be very competent and will probably do the job very well. Is she too conservative? not enough? or colorless?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('khebab', 'C')an somebody can explain to me what's the big deal about Miers? I'm not American so I'm having a hard time understanding what's seem to be the problem. Well, she's not conservative enough for some, but some say she's devoutly religious, as if that would suffice. I, for one, hope she checks her beliefs at the door. Others say its cronyism - I started out thinking this and haven't ventured far from it (ref. former FEMA head & new Chairman/Fed Reserve for examples of this) Others say we don't know enough about her to make a decision - I probably fall here as well.

This cartoon seems to sum it up nicely:

Khebab I agree with what Emmer said.

Meirs has absolutely no experience as a judge. Constitutional law is totally unlike any other kind of law, it is not the kind of law practiced by a private lawyer which is all she is.

It sure reeks to high heaven of cronyism. I think it really made a lot of people upset that she just has no experience in constitutional law.

AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) - Risking a possible clash with the Senate, President Bush insisted Monday he will not turn over documents detailing the private advice that Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers has given him while serving in the White House.

...skip...
``In other words, they've asked for paperwork about the decision- making process, what her recommendations were,'' Bush said.

Can't know what she knows!

Bush just appointed a woman to the US Supreme Court who has absolutely no judicial experience whatsoever. Her prime qualification seems to be that Bush knows her personally. While America's hugely, massively, incredibly, overwhelmingly corrupt legal system is reviled throughout the world, though not in America proper, usually such an appointment carries at least the appearance of propriety. This was like Bush naming his mother to be Captain of an aircraft carrier. Clearly, Bush does not think we will have to live with the legacy of his appointment.

What do you think they talk about?

Next thing you know, his dog will be his new advisor should Rove ever have to 'resign'.

Wasn't there some Roman emperor who appointed his horse :o ? What do we know about Bush's dog, the one he was carrying off AirForce 1 while NO was drowning? Is his dog a better SC judge than the Roman horse?

At least, dogs have reliable prejudices on reproductive issues.

Looks like Miers has withdrawn her application!

What is your take on this? Political pressure?

My take is that they did all they could and could not get the votes to appoint her and rather than give Bush a black eye she was asked to withdraw.

I also think this was totally Bush's idea to appoint her with out much input from others that is why it was such a bad choice he did it all by himself I think he was like "hey I know real good lawyer". Moron.

The other thing is most likely Rove and others have been indited and Bush needs all the political capital he can get right now he has no ability to fight for Meirs.

If on the outside chance Cheney is indited all hell will break loose in the US.
