End of fuel subsidies causes rise in mental illness

Unread postby some_guy282 » Sat 22 Oct 2005, 17:16:05

I found this article to be interesting. It deals with a rise in patients at a mental hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia. The end in fuel subsidies recently has caused hardship for many people. This is leading to more stress, and more activity at the hospital.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he number of patients being treated at the hospital on a long-term basis rose 5 percent to 180 after the fuel price hike, according to the data, which also showed that the number of people seeking treatment at the hospital on a short-term basisreached between 60 and 70 per day.

Will we see the same effects at mental hospitals here in the US as increasing gas prices lead to more anxiety and depression? Or will the suburbanites not be able to afford the gasoline to drive to the hospital? :?

If the rules are being changed under peoples' feet and they don't understand the reason why, it can easily shake your whole faith in "the system". I expect to see more of the same.

When we had the depression in the 1930's there were mass suicides when some poeple lost everything they had. A large number suicided because this were jsut too hard and a few even took out their families.

IMO, I think becuase of the sense of entitlement we have now-a-days we can expect to see even more. its going to be near impossible for some to come to terms with another depression. not even a die off jsut a fairly big depression would do it.

Sadly unsurprising, predicted by several. I'm guessing that likely profiles of those newly bent or broken include both peak oil believers isolated within local status quo conformity (which might be christian/ liberal/whatever), and status quo believers who crack under the challenge of their worsening material situation. Of course not everybody has expectations to lose.
The former at least have the advantage of a coherent explanation, however imperfect, for what is happening and might happen next. Helps me anyway.
